MARCH  2018 UPDATE

The Tenth Annual Silent Auction will be held on March 9th at Hillside Country Club.  Please buy your tickets as soon as possible and encourage others to buy tickets.  This event is open to the public.  Classroom parents at Palmer River are contributing baskets, so check with your child’s teacher for details.  If you or someone you know would like to make a monetary donation, a gift basket or gift certificate donation please drop them off in the office at Palmer River.  All donations are tax deductible and a letter will be provided for your records.  Also, some companies will match your donation; so please remember to inquire if your donation qualifies for a match by your company.  This is a major fundraiser; we need to raise funds.  The more we raise, the more we can give to our students!

Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 14th at 6:30pm in the library at Palmer River.   We hope to see you there!

Excerpt from weekly newsletter...

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is with great pleasure that I share the news that Elise DuBois, our Assistant Principal at Palmer River, was just named the Massachusetts Assistant Principal of the Year! I believe her response to congratulations from Dr. Azar speaks to one reason why this award is so perfect to honor her:  “I look forward to the opportunity to shed light on all the wonderful work done by the professionals in our district. Everyone works so hard- we all need an excuse to celebrate!”   Elise always recognizes the hard work and dedication of our teachers, treats children and parents with the utmost respect, and strives for excellence every day.  I am personally grateful for all she does and couldn’t be happier that she is being recognized for HER hard work for the children and their families in Rehoboth.   Bravo, Mrs. DuBois!!!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for your patience during our construction at Palmer River. The solar panels in the parking lot are almost ready to go online.  The parking lot will now be well lit and will generate electricity for our school. The roof is also almost completed despite the weather!  It is projected to be done within the next couple of weeks.  Each section of the building seemed to have some minor noise for only a couple of days. The project was well managed, with compliments to our Director of Facilities, Mr. David Nappi!

Health News!
There are cases of flu, strep and stomach bug throughout the school as can be expected at this time of year. Please remember the fever rule from the DPH: students need to be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Ibuprofen before returning to the classroom. It is recommended they are back to eating and drinking normally and have the energy to complete the entire school day.

Miscellaneous: The PTSA Reflections contest deadline has been extended to Friday, 1/12/2018.

We are looking forward to the return of Bren Bataclan for another fourth grade mural during the week of January 29, 2018. The mural theme will be “STEAM,” science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy New Year!
Dear Parents,
We are approaching the half-way mark for this school year. I want to take a few minutes of your time with some important facts about attendance. I am a strong proponent of attendance not only because daily attendance teaches about responsibility but also because it has a strong correlation to achievement. Did you know?...
 Students should miss no more than 9 days per year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation. (Yes, it is not too early to think about that!)  By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs a student may drop out of high school.  It doesn’t matter if absences are excused or unexcused. They all represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn.  Absent students affect the whole class, slowing down instruction in order to “catch them up.”  Kindergartners and first graders who are chronically absent struggle academically in later years.  Chronic absenteeism can be just one day every two weeks. Please have your child miss school only if truly sick.  Vacations should respectfully be taken during scheduled school vacation time.

WEEKLY UPDATE – 12/6/17

Palmer River Elementary

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our goal is to provide a positive and collaborative learning environment that embeds engaging strategies and rigorous instruction every day to all students for continuous student achievement.

We know that we are gearing up for the December holidays...so here is what we are doing to find some balance between learning and fun.
 Our lesson plans are focused on the new NG- reading program, Envisions Math, and Science lessons through the last day of school.  When we do celebrate holidays, we will include the recognition of traditions and practices of other cultures around the world.   Movies will never be shown in full. They will be linked and connected to learning and standards. What is better than a great book?  We will continue to avoid food-based celebrations. If the teacher chooses to have snacks, we encourage choosing healthy fruits and vegetables. We will always remain aware of food allergies and hand washing.  Holiday-themed lessons and activities are left for the last days before vacation. Children (and adults) get saturated after a short time...  Routine is important for many of our students and the holidays can be difficult for those who have experienced trauma or loss. We need to continue to be sensitive to all student needs and feelings.
As we do all this and plan our December lessons, we are maintaining an awareness to "Time on Learning" while enjoying the season!
