Rehoboth PTSA Monthly Meeting                                           

November 4, 2015

Palmer River Elementary

  • 6:00 PM Meeting is called to order by Karen DeRoche.

  • Karen asks attendants to look over minutes from meeting held on October 7, 2015.   Susan Bogosian motioned to pass, Wendy DeClerq seconded.

Principal Report –Mrs.Dubois

  • Mrs. Dubois reported that Mrs. Miguel had broken her foot and would return next week.

  • Mrs. Dubois spoke about the Professional Development Day which focused on Envisions Mathematics, Keys to Literacy and Stem Scope Education.

  • On November 5th, Beckwith will host an internet safety program for Rehoboth and Dighton Schools.

  • Mrs. Dubois showed the fliers for Reflections, the PTA contest that goes up to Grade 12.  The information will be presented in Art and Music class with the theme,” Let your imagination fly”.

  • Mrs. Dubois spoke of Bill Harley’s return, which would have a grade 3 writing focus and a school wide assembly.  This will cost $3000 and help towards it would be appreciated.  Traci Cady made motion to move PTSA money to help with this.

Mr. Pirraglia                                                                           

  • Mr. Pirraglia said they were very busy at Beckwith.  The Haunted Hallways were a big success with all positive feedback.

  • Picture Day was October 26th.

  • Mr. Pirraglia spoke of following activities at Beckwith; allowing costumes on 10/30 ( no masks or face paint), Lip synch completion on 10/29, upcoming Student Council election, Food drive 11/4 through 11/13, and Parent Teacher conferences on 11/12 and 11/19.  These conferences can be electronically set up.

  • Professional Development included Using Data to Drive Instruction and Math Work.

Treasurer’s Report-Traci Cady

  • Traci spoke of all the recent activity; she is still waiting for a few Jack fest receipts.

  • She mentioned that membership to Rhode Island Recycling was paid.  PTSA hold 4 cards which teachers can coordinate to use for inexpensive supplies.

  • Susan Bogosian motioned to transfer $1000 to Palmer River for Bill Harley.  Erin Baer seconded. Motion approved.

 

 

Mr.Kelly/Mrs.DiPalma Update

  • Tim Kelly and Steve Patrick introduced themselves, as teachers representing the Teacher’s union.  Mr.Kelly informed the PTSA that the teachers have been trying to negotiate a contract.    A mediator has been brought in, but there may be teacher action soon and they wanted to give a head’s up.

Committee Chair Update

The Jackfest- Lori Rossi

  • Lori thanked Nancy Breault and Susan Bogosian for setting up Palmer River, including the walkway, game room and food.

  • Lori also credited Mr. Martone and the teacher’s with their work on the Haunted Hallway.  It flowed easily from each area and student participants were sensitive to the needs of children who may have been nervous or afraid. 

  • Lori thanked the Leo Club.  There were approximately a dozen members who staffed the game room and set up a free costume give away.  45 costumes were given out.

  • Lori said a lot of items need storage.  Susan asked if there was any room at Beckwith as there is trouble storing things for regular PTSA usage.  Mr.Pirraglia said he would talk to Karen Carpenter, the head of facilities at Beckwith to see what was available.  Lori said next year it would be good to have more sponsors.  The popcorn and bags would also need to be replenished.

Calendar Update- Lori Rossi-

  • Lori said there was a copy out to printing, but it hadn’t been proofed.  There are tentative dates even though it is behind schedule.  250 will be printed.

Book Fair at Beckwith Middle School.

  • Karen DeRoche said it would run November 16th through 20th with set up on November 13th.  Volunteers are still needed and can be signed up through Volunteer Spot. 

Fundraising Update- Traci Cady

  • Kidstuff Coupon Books- Traci said they were almost done.  She said that they did not sell as many as the previous year and noted that some fundraisers work better on every other year schedule, which could be considered in future.

  • Genevieve is going on from 11/6 through 11/19.   This replaced Cristoline.  December 7th from 3 to 6 is the anticipated pick up.  Traci will be the point of contact at Beckwith and Suzanne Cabral at Palmer River.  Help will be needed with phone calls.

PEG grants-Wendi DeClerq

  • Wendi discussed possible deadline of the last Friday before Holiday break.  The deadline was decided to be at December 16th.  Wendi and the PTSA board will go over them together on possibly December 28th to choose recipients.  Wendy noted that to apply for a PEG grant, one needs to be a member of the PTSA.  Membership is open all year and currently has 85 members.

  • Restaurant of the Month- Susan reported that Don Tequilas brought in $125.00.  Rosie’s’ Market is still pending. Susan said that while creation of this program was labor intensive in the summer, it is now on a roll.  It serves to give back to the community. November’s restaurant is the Ice Cream Barn. 

  • Sweetheart Dance- Melissa Goulart- Melissa spoke of changes being made due to last year’s event being too crowded and  too long of a wait for food.   It will be split into k,1, and 2 on one Friday night  and grade 3 and 4 the following.

  • Susan Bogosian made motion to adjourn meeting.  Wendi DeClerq seconded.  Meeting adjourned at 6:45.
