Na Kamali'i O 'Iliahi

Na Kamali’i O ‘Iliahi is an after school ukulele program which focuses on perpetuating the Hawaiian and local musical traditions through the playing of the ukulele, singing, and hula dancing. Na Kamali’i also promotes a positive self-esteem, as ukulele members practice and perform in front of large audiences throughout the Wahiawa community and the island of ‘O’ahu. Members in grades 3-5 practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 – 3:15 pm in Iliahi School’s Lumi Pa’ani. Performances thus far have included the following:

Prior to the start of the ukulele program, teachers and students are informed about the program and the academic and behavioral criteria that needs to be met and maintained to enter and remain in the program. Program begins in the first week of August and runs until the last day of school. Throughout the year attendance and behavior is monitored. Students’ work habits and classroom behaviors are also monitored by their classroom teachers.

A mixture of Hawaiian and contemporary songs are taught to the students. Basic chords and the fundamentals of strumming and picking are introduced during the first month of the program. Hula dancing is also taught during the fall intersession and January.

Na Kamali'i Rules

  1. Be in the LUMI on time (Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:15-3:15 pm)
  2. Smile while you/re singing
  3. Keep up with your work
  4. Possess a positive attitude
  5. Practice, practice, practice!

For all performances, please report to the performance
area 40 minutes before the performance


Attire for performances:
  • New Na Kamali'i Uniform, black pants
    • Boys: Black shoes
    • Girls: Black shoes or sandals
  • Hula Dancers: Full outfits
