Understanding by Design in Durham Public Schools

Durham Public Schools uses the concepts, ideas, and structures of Understanding by Design (UbD) as a planning framework to ensure high quality curriculum, instruction, and assessment for all students. Understanding by Design is the body of work of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe which promotes the application of design thinking to align planning for rigorous classroom instruction.  Although the work of UbD often makes use of templates, graphic organizers, and step by step processes,  those used  by Durham Public Schools Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment team to produce the district curriculum are used as a method to promote the thought process of establishing with the intended outcomes, setting performance standards, and planning instruction.

The Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment team uses the UbD 2.0 Unit Map template to build unit maps by grade and content to support consistent focus on the Durham Public Schools Mission Statement and the NC Standard Course of Study (NC Essential Standards and Common Core State Standards).  All Durham Public Schools curriculum documents and related professional development is tightly aligned to the UbD process and structures.
