Welcome Back to School.

We will be using Schoology this year.  Schoology is a new District tool for teachers, students, and parents.  It has a Facebook feel to it and it is where you will find HW, links, quizzes and all kinds of awesome things.  Please see various notes on this page with regard to Schoology.

Check out the Book Recommendations link.  I have added two books by Laurie Halse Anderson- one of my favorite young adult writers, plus a few others.

As of now, Schoology is only available to teachers and students, so please ask your student to show you their Schoology account. We will let you know as soon as it becomes available for parent use.  Grades will be in IC this year as not everything we do in class will be a grade in Schoology.

We use Expeditionary Learning curriculum.  It is designed around the Common Core Standards and offers a variety of reading and writing opportunities.

The first two weeks of school will include STAR, SRI and a District Assessment all for baseline data.  We will also read "Priscialla and the Wimps" as a mentor text for literature and a nonfiction article also as a mentor text of that genre.

Our first Module will be Challenges and Survival featuring A Long Walk to Water.

Homework General Info:
We are using Schoology this year. Students will be working on increasing and strengthening their vocabulary this year.  The first week of each two week cycle is strictly working on the vocabulary.  There will be a variety of activities.  The second week will involve a close read of either a piece of literature or nonfiction text with specific directions on what to do with the text and how to complete the assignment.
I will provide students one hard copy of the HW.  If they lose it or if they are absent and need the HW, a copy will be placed in the HW folder in their LA Schoology.  They will need to print the second copy or write it out on notebook paper.

Reading 30 minutes every night. Respond to one question per week in Schoology.
