Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts! In class we focus on building a love for reading while also learning to be critical thinkers and collaborators. Students have weekly homework, in the form of AOW's and nightly reading. Be sure to check our googleclassroom for specific assignments and feedback.

AOW's are now in googleclassroom- students can complete on paper or on the computer.

Current Unit

Reading for Research and Writing Argument: In this unit students evaluate the complex outcomes of using pesticides to eradicate diseases carried through parasites.  Students read a number of complex texts and learn to evaluate a text for credibility, sufficient evidence and bias. At the end of the unit students must decide if the harmful consequences outweigh the benefits by writing an argumentative essay that cites multiple sources. 

Essential Questions: How do the benefits of DDT outweigh it's harmful consequences? How do humans actions affect the world? How do different authors approach providing information and making an argument? How does reading for research help me form an opinion and make an argument?

Central Text: Frightful's Mountain

Supporting Texts: The Exterminator, Welcome Back, Rachel Carson: Sounding the Alarm and many other informational texts and mixed media.
