Language/Oral Communication in Health Education

What questions do I ask myself as I select the critical discipline-specific vocabulary to emphasize during teaching and learning?
There are three critical questions a 21st. century health educator needs to ask to determine critical discipline-specific vocabulary:
1. What vocabulary is critical to adopt and sustain health behavior as it relates to the issue be covered.?
2. What vocabulary is critical in enhancing health outcomes related to the health issue that is being covered?
3. What vocabulary is age appropriate to improving health outcomes related to the health issue that is being covered?
How do I set expectations so that the vocabulary gets used regularly during teaching and learning?
Each health unit needs to include age appropriate health vocabulary that is carefully thought out and connected to the health issue. Consistency of delivery develops learner expectations that vocabulary is an important part of the learning process.
What strategies/supports will help students understand the meaning and use of this vocabulary within the context of this discipline?
The choice of real life situations or scenarios that effectively utilize the chosen vocabulary will help embed that vocabulary in the learners future practice and application.
