"Singin' in the Snow"
The Down Town Glee Club opens its 88th season with a new director, and honoring two cinematic greats.
New Musical Director Joe Martin is an accomplished solo pianist, accompanist, and chamber musician.
He holds an undergraduate degree from Queens College in Piano Performance and a Masters Degree in Collaborative Piano, the art of accompanying.
He works as a freelance accompanist for singers primarily from Queens College, and Manhattan School of Music, participating in former’s “Classical Singers Career Development Club”
showcases in 2011 and 2012, and Manhattan School of Music’s Summer Voice Festival in 2013.
From classical to contemporary, Beethoven to Broadway, Ravel to rap, Mr. Martin’s knowledge and experience encompass the breadth of the music world.
The Club could not be more pleased to have him on board.
Mr. Martin’s first challenge will be The Club’s holiday concert, “Singin’ in the Snow,” which honors both a man and a movie, two icons of music.
Though his name may not be familiar, Arthur Freed was behind some of America’s most seminal music.
As lyricist to his and composer Nacio Brown’s songs in the MGM movie Singin’ in the Rain, Freed holds a prominent place in music history.
But as film producer of a jaw-dropping list of cinematic musical milestones, Freed’s importance cannot be understated.
The Wizard of Oz, An American in Paris, The Band Wagon, Meet Me in St. Louis, On the Town, Easter Parade,
and the aforementioned Singin’ in the Rain are but a few of the movies Freed spearheaded.
The Down Town Glee Club is proud to be honoring such a monumental figure in the American Standard library on the 120th anniversary of his birth.
2014 also marks the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins.
One of the world’s most beloved films, Poppins garnered a then record thirteen Academy Award nominations in 1964,
winning five, including Original Music Score and Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” It seems fitting that the Club recognize this great film.
No Winter concert would be complete without holiday music, and the Down Town Glee Club’s annual event is no exception.
Seasonal selections from the sacred to the secular will be featured along with our signature surprises and brand of harmonics.
Great music, singing, refreshments, and the warmth and spirit of the season
make the Down Club Glee Club Holiday Concert an affair not to be missed!
