8th Grade Science

Important Information

  • Penny Wars

LPI and Skyview are teaming up for a fundraiser to donate to a school in Houston that has been affected by Hurricane Harvey. We are not competing against Skyview, but are both conducting penny wars in each building.

We will start the Penny Wars on Monday morning. As usual, pennies count as positive towards your grade level count. Silver and dollars take away from your grade level count but will still add to the individual class count.

The grade level that wins will be allowed to pie some of their grade level teachers.

The individual class that raises the most money will be given a popsicle and pop party on the day before the Rivalry Game.

If the school raises a collective $1,000; the NJHS officers will be pied by teachers.

If the school raises a collective $1,250; the administration will be pied by the Autism Center students.

Please encourage students to participate and donate. Our proceeds will be going to CE King Middle School in Sheldon, TX. CE King is one of four campuses in their district that is currently inoperable and is under safety inspections before the school can be used again. The school can use the money in any way they deem fit from new books in the library, clothes for displaced students, materials for class, etc.

This Week...

  • Week of 9/11-9/14
    9/11-9/14

Monday: Scientific Method Steps, Complete Procedures, Complete Experiment, Record Your Results

    Warm~Up:
    Independent Reflection:
This assignment is being graded as a test. It will show me what you know about the scientific method and that you are able to apply it. This final document will be picked up on Monday, 9/18. What are some things that are great with your paper? It truly reflects what you know and demonstrates your ability to use it. What are some things you need to improve on prior to turning in this final document? Should you rewrite it neatly, type it, organize it. Are sections of it missing? Anything that you can think of to improve your final grade.

    Today:
Once you have finished your procedures you are going to complete the experiment using the steps you created. I will mix the soap and water solution. Other than that, follow your steps. Collect your data along the way. Write your observations down. Remember this will help you with your conclusion.

Tuesday: Scientific Method Steps, Perform Experiment, Record Your Results, Analyze Data, State Conclusion

    Today:
Once you have completed all trials of your experiment you need to start analyzing your data. This includes graphs and explanations of your findings. Then you need to use the information from your observations and your findings to complete your conclusion. Your conclusion must be well written. It must include a topic sentence and a conclusion sentence. You must talk about your hypothesis. Was it correct or not? How can you improve or change it? Use correct grammar and sentence structure in the conclusion. I am not asking for a specific size of a paragraph. I am looking for quality writing and not quantity. If you have questions please ask me. Your final completed document will be due on Monday, September 18th. You will have one full day tomorrow to work on this in class.

Wednesday: You will have a guest teacher today. Please follow classroom expectations.

    Today:
Last day to work on finalizing your scientific method lab write up in class. You will have no additional class time to work on this. This will be due on Monday 9/18.

    Thursday: Metric System

    Warm~Up:
What is the difference between standard and metric systems of measurement?

    Today:
Metric Length PowerPoint, Metric Notes, and Length Lab
