"Today, Tuesday, September 30, 2014, we dedicate the Discovery Playground to the young people of this and future generations.  May they care for their new playground.  May it be a safe place for them to play.  May they stretch their muscles and their imaginations as they grow and laugh and make memories that will last a lifetime."
Stephen Kron - President
Discovery Playground Committee

Ribbon Cutting Photos Posted
We had a very successful ribbon cutting on September 30th. Representatives from Kroger and T. Marzetti spoke about their contributions. Dublin Schools superintendent Todd Hoadley and City Council member Hearcel Craig applauded the community effort that made this a reality. Pictures are on the Dedication page.

Ribbon Cutting Celebration Schedule
A ribbon cutting celebration will take place on Tuesday, September 30th. Bring your family and a picnic dinner for this grand opening of the Discovery Playground. Representatives from the city will be present as well as the Discover Playground Committee. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the first stage of reconstruction, meet new neighbors and learn about future plans.

In preparation for the ceremony, there will be a general park clean-up on Saturday 9/27. Bring a shovel, rake or gloves and help get the park ready for the celebration. We'll be removing some overgrown landscaping, filling in some mulch holes and other general clean-up. Hope to see you there, families are welcome.

Saturday 9/27: 11:00AM - 1:00PM - Park cleanup - meet at playground
Tuesday 9/30: 6:00PM - 8:00PM - Ribbon cutting celebration/family picnic

The playground is open, what's next?
In short, plenty. While the children are already enjoying the playground, we need to make it a more comfortable place for the adults and families that accompany them. Additional shade trees will be planted and benches need to be purchased and placed around the playground. The brick paver patio will be relocating to the side closer to Olde Sawmill Elementary where both new and previous donors will be honored.

We continue to ask for donations to help complete the next round, any amount helps move us towards a better playground and community asset. See the donations page for details on how to contribute.

Final Layout Approved - Construction Starting Soon

The final layout for the playground has been approved by the city and is slated to begin construction in August. Click the picture above for a larger view. The playground will continue to be called Discovery Playground.

Fundraising Update 8/2

Thank you to many new donors we have reached nearly $45,000 for the new playground. Your generosity is going to make a significant difference in our community. Please make sure to support our community business sponsors, and thank them for their support. Thank you also to Menchie's for hosting a successful fundraising event.

If you have made a contribution for a brick, we will be contacting you in the next couple of months regarding the inscription. All donations of $125 or more will be commemorated with a brick at the entry to the new playground. Please see the donations page if you would like to purchase a brick or any of our other levels of sponsorship. If you have already donated less than $125 and would like a brick, you can donate the difference and it will add to your family total. This is also a great opportunity for community groups (Scout troops, PTOs, etc.) to be part of the new playground.

For those who have donated already, thank you. Our small volunteer group is very busy working with the city, playground designers, local businesses, etc., if you haven't yet received an acknowledgement of your donation, please accept or apologies. If you donated via PayPal and received a receipt from them, or have a cancelled check, we have received your donation.

Menchie's Fundraiser Day 7/30 - all day

Menchie's (in the Kroger Marketplace Centre) has generously offered to donate 20% of sales on July 30th to the Discovery Playground. What a great way to enjoy some fro yo and help support the playground.

We are reaching out to businesses in the community now and hope to accelerate the contributions with their help. Donations made by 6/21 will be included in the initial purchase of additional playground elements to be installed when the new playground is built, by combining shipping and installation costs with the city your donation now will go further. Later donations will go towards the 2015 phase of the construction.

Voting Results are in from the Schools
Olde Sawmill and Granby Elementary School students voted on the playground elements that they most want at the new Discovery Playground. Visit our community page to see the results.

Fundraising Update
We have just surpassed our first milestone, $10,000 thanks to those who have already contributed, but still have a ways to go. We are also beginning to reach out to businesses in the area to secure some larger donations.

Construction of the playground is slated to begin in August. If you are planning to donate, please do so soon. We'd like to complete the first phase build of additional items during the city's construction to save money and make each donation go further. Mail-in forms and a PayPal link are on the Donate tab.

Also, we'll be having a fundraising event at Coaches on Bethel Road on June 3rd at 6:00 PM. $20 per person, includes some beer, wine and food donated by neighbor Pat Leonard.

Following months of fundraising and planning, on May 27th, 1992 neighbors, businesses and local organizations worked together to build the original Discovery Playground over a long weekend. In the years since, the park has become the focus of the community, a city landmark and a draw for families and tens of thousands of children, fostering community, encouraging physical activity and sustaining property values.

Time, weather and changing standards for play structures have resulted in the need to replace the playground. The City of Columbus, with neighborhood input, is building a replacement playground with a play structure, swings and a music kit. The community is coming together once again to help expand and improve upon this plan to ensure that Discovery Playground remains a neighborhood destination for years to come. The picture above is how local students have envisioned the new playground, with the new elements highlighted.

The estimated cost to add these new items is approximately $60,000. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Discovery Playground, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Volunteer opportunities also exist to help build new benches, reset paver bricks and make other improvements. Follow us on this website or Facebook to learn how you can be a part of the future of Olde Sawmill Park and Discovery Playground.
