Welcome to the website for the Highway 401/40 Interchange Reconfiguration and Highway 401 Pavement Reconstruction in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent

The Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO) has retained Dillon Consulting Limited to complete the Detailed Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study of the approved design for the reconfiguration of the Highway 401/40 Interchange and reconstruction of 10 km of Highway 401 eastbound lanes in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.  

The project is being undertaken to improve the operational and capacity needs of this section of Highway 401 and Highway 40 and will accommodate the future widening of Highway 401 to eight lanes. This includes the following:
  • Reconfiguration of the interchange, including replacement of the Highway 40 bridge over Highway 401
  • Replacement/rehabilitation of three structures and construction of a new structure in the interchange area, which includes those over McGregor Creek and Lucas Drain
  • The EA approved design includes the temporary full closure of Highway 40 at the interchange and all interchange ramps for a maximum of 10 months. Opportunities to reduce the duration of the closure are being considered
  • A local roads detour will be in place during the temporary closure
  • Realignment of Pinehurst Line
  • Reconstruction of 10 km of the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 from east of Bloomfield Road to west of Kent Bridge Road.  One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Highway 401
The detailed design and class EA study will build upon the Preliminary Design and the previously approved Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) (2009) and TESR Addendum (2013) to further develop and refine engineering and environmental components of the project, including construction staging and traffic management. 

This project will be coordinated with an adjacent bridge rehabilitation project (Project Reference: WP 3084-11-00).
