On this website, you will find: MCA Assessment Item Details: For each grade level and type of test (math, science, reading), you will be able to find out all of the details about the question types included on the MCA test. You can also view newly released items.
MDE also recently released Student Readiness Tools for students to practice online for the MCAs. Note: You may need to clear your browser’s cache to navigate to the page using the dropdown menus on PearsonAccess Next. No login information is needed for the online SRTs. Students select their grade level to review videos and practice activities on how to navigate within the test, how to use tools, and how different item types function.
Another new feature to check out: Minnesota Question Tools
Step by step guide for creating sessions (for office use only). Teachers, all of your sessions will be created for you. Questions, please see your building principal.
This is an overview with pictures of what the students will experience when taking the test.
Here are step by step directions for how to administer your MCA test session on the day of the test.
The script for the teacher when giving the online MCA tests can be found here.
Active Monitoring
Test Administrators must actively monitor students throughout the entire test administration and ensure that all students are working independently and making progress in their tests. Test Administrators cannot complete other tasks, such as lesson planning, grading papers, or talking casually with other staff.
Materials on Walls or Student Desks
Any materials that pertain to direct language instruction or the language expectations of an academic content area should be covered or removed during test administration. If testing is taking place in the EL classroom, all materials on walls or student desks that pertain to language instruction should be covered or removed. Although content is referenced in the test items, a student’s content knowledge is not part of the language proficiency scoring. If there are questions about whether the materials are content-focused or support language instruction, then cover or remove them. MDE does not have a list of materials that can remain visible to students during testing.
Test Security Reminder (As reported from MDE following 2024 drop-ins)
Districts must follow the policies and procedures for statewide assessments as documented in each district’s written District Policies and Procedures for Statewide Assessments (previously titled District Test Security Procedure). This procedure must be finalized prior to the administration of statewide assessments.
Some of the most common security violations that were observed by MDE monitoring visits during statewide assessment administrations last spring included:
· Online assessment calendar does not reflect actual testing schedule.
· Test directions not followed exactly as scripted.
· Test content not covered if a student had to temporarily leave the room.
· Not enough space in between students who are testing.
Some of the more common violations that were reported to MDE by districts as an Assessment Security Record included:
· Staff not completing all required training prior to being involved in testing.
· Failure to keep testing materials secure at all times.
· Impermissible assistance by a staff member.
· Student completing an assessment on a personal device and/or outside of a secure testing location.

Please check all devices to make sure the power up and to make sure all of the keys work. If they have troubles, get them to the media center right away for repair.
When using chromebooks for testing, there are some troubleshooting steps that can be taken to be proactive and reactive to issues. NOTE: you need to check these things before starting testing.
1. If the display size is not correct (too big and everything doesn't fit on screen or too small), you can reset it back to the correct size. Also, sometimes kids mess with the display colors. Here are directions on how to fix both of these issues. Display Settings
2. The chromebook can act sluggish or not run properly if there are many saved files on the device. In that case, before testing, we should delete those files off the chromebook so it has more "space" to work well. Deleting Files
3. On chromebooks that are on carts, there are often many users that login to the same chromebook. This takes up "space" on the chromebook and can also cause the chromebook to not run properly. Please delete all users on each chromebook before the testing season begins. Deleting Users
4. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PLUG HEADPHONES INTO CHROMEBOOKS BEFORE TURNING ON THE CHROMEBOOKS WHEN TESTING. ALSO, ADJUST THE SOUND LEVEL BEFORE LOGGING IN.
