KARE Program

The KARE (Kindness/Attention/Respect/Excellence) Program offers services that address the other side of the report card in student achievement: crisis counseling, social and emotional learning, and character education. Available as a FREE service for any student on campus, KARE consists of:
  • ATTENTION MASTERS: An evidence-based attention curriculum that helps students to build skills of focus, stress management, and emotional regulation.

  • INDIVIDUAL MENTORING: Individual and short-term counseling for any student facing crisis or trauma.

  • WISDOM WRITERS: A character education writing program that inspires students to improve their writing while discovering core values.

KARE, which operates under the Palm Desert Charter Middle School Foundation, is directed by Jacob Shefa, Ph.D. Serving students at all levels throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond for nearly two decades, Dr. Shefa's doctoral research focused on the awakening of empathy and compassion in at-risk teens through Mentoring and Writing.

KARE works in conjunction with the PDCMS Counseling Department. Interested students—or parents—please contact Mr. Ruiz, (alfredo.ruiz@desertsands.us) Shanna McCown (shanna.mccown@desertsands.us), or Ms. Vasquez (jessica.vasquez@desertsands.us) in Counseling.
