BAND

Band is open to all DCS Instrumental Music students in Grades 5-12 upon the approval of the Band Director.

Students play a variety of literature to include classical and popular songs.

The main goal of these ensembles is to establish the fundamentals of playing an instrument.  Aspects of learning include: instrumental technique, tone quality and intonation, phrasing, sight reading and developing an understanding of the music.

All Band members are scheduled for a weekly small group lesson, at which attendance is mandatory with the exception of testing.

All Band members are required to attend Band rehearsals, group lessons and every scheduled Music Department event including concerts and special performances.


CHORUS

Middle School Chorus: Middle School Chorus is a mixed vocal group of soprano, alto, and baritone. Music will be studied and rehearsed from a variety of musical styles. Students will participate in activities that include sight singing, basic vocal technique, reading music notation, singing individual parts, and expression. Middle School Chorus will also contribute to the musical life of the DeRuyter community through concert performances.


High School Chorus: High School Chorus is a mixed vocal group of soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Music will be studied and rehearsed from a variety of musical styles. Students will participate in activities that include sight singing, basic vocal technique, reading music notation, singing individual parts, and expression. High School Chorus will also contribute to the musical life of the DeRuyter community through concert performances.


Select Chorus: Select Chorus is a small ensemble that performs a variety of advanced music concentrating on a cappella repertoire. 


Piano: An introductory course to beginning piano. 

 

 


Art Courses:

ART 7

This course is an introduction to specific 2 dimensional problems.  The difference between shape and form, drawing simple still life, collage experiment, positive and negative space, lettering and alphabet design, some crafts and color theory.

STUDIO ART

This course is required of Art Majors and those continuing with the Art sequence.  

It is a beginning course covering the fundamentals of Art, Design, Color, Form, Perspective and a variety of Media. 


ADVANCED ART - II - III

Advanced Art I  - 1 Year - 1/2 - 1 Credit

The emphasis in each Art class will vary depending somewhat on the student's interest and ability.  

The 40 week schedule will be divided up into 2 semesters.  

Each semester, only a select amount of the mediums will be introduced.  This will allow more time to explore specific Art forms.

A student that would like a sequence in Art needs to take an additional year of Advanced Art where mediums are taught.

Advanced Art II - 1 Year - 1/2 Credit - 1 Credit

A variety of media and processes are explored, focusing on the elements of Art and the principles of Design.  

This Art course is designed to give the student and understanding of the structure of work as well as the historical significance of Art of past and present.  

Emphasis may be placed more on the individual's interests, needs and purpose relative to the ability and Art experience of the individual.

*Pre-requisite - Studio Art and Advanced Art I

 

Advanced Art III - 1 year - 1/2 Credit - 1 Credit

This is an advanced course for the 3rd year student and it is designed to help students further their special interests in fields of their choice.

There is major emphasis on individual work, more student focused projects and Portfolio preparation.
