Day 45 Recap - Wednesday, November 6th

posted Nov 6, 2013, 1:21 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hey Everybody!

Thank you for an awesome term. It was not always fun, but we did our best and all-in-all I believe we learned a lot of life skills that we can take to the bank (no pun intended).  I feel very passionate about the topics we discussed in class, because I want each of you to be successful adults and that starts now.  My challenge to each of you is don't let this information die like so many other classes.  Keep it fresh and start to do some things that are positive investments in your life. Get training for a tradeskill career. Go to NWTC.  Plan for college. These are the investments that can really make a different for you now.

Have a great rest of your year. It was my pleasure teaching you.

Day 44 Recap - Tuesday, November 5th

posted Nov 5, 2013, 1:22 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hello Everybody!

We finished the final presentation today. Great work on this project. Although we still have areas to improve on, we have definitely shown some growth in knowledge of investing through this course.

In order to complete the earning of you 20 group points, you need to submit a short group evaluation to me.  In addition, the Investing a Dollar and 2 individual projects needed to be completed as well.

Tomorrow is the final. It has been a great term - enjoy the rest of your year.

Day 43 Recap - Monday, November 4th

posted Nov 5, 2013, 4:57 AM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hello everybody!

Today we had two of our final three presentations go. One group was unable to due to a missing group member. We will wrap up presentations tomorrow.  Overall, great job - I'll discuss more with you the areas we were strong in and areas we need to improve on Tuesday.  After the presentations, there was a reflection to complete about the class as a whole.  I wanted to get your thoughts and opinions on your experiences to know what I'm doing well and what I can keep improving on for next time.

Things are wrapping up quickly - only two more days to go!  Double check - do you have everything you need in?  All reflection blogs complete?  Both of your individual projects for the Big Project?  Did you complete your Investing a Dollar paper?  In addition, there will be a final test on Wednesday to get your mind ready for!

It has been a fun term.

Day 42 Recap - Friday, November 1st

posted Nov 1, 2013, 2:06 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hello everybody!

Great job on presentations today. I could tell that you will be taking some major points away from this class. My concern isn't that you remember all the minute details - it is that you are able to reason and explain why investing is a smart decision, and why you need to start. I truly hope you begin an investment portfolio soon.

For presenters on Monday - remember to have notes ready, be poised, and be ready to speak loud and enthusiastically!

Have a great weekend!

Day 40-41 Recap - Wednesday and Thursday, October 30-31st

posted Oct 31, 2013, 8:49 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Today was the last day to rehearse and revise presentations.  Tomorrow is the big presentation day. The goal is to get through all 8 groups. Each group will also be peer reviewed by one of the others.

In addition to the performance, you also were responsible for at least TWO individual projects that show your personal growth, learning, and effort on this project.  I also will allow a longer singular assignment to cover the TWO project requirement. However, given this, it needs to exceed my already high expectations.

Next week, we will wrap up the course and stock competition and try to tie things together. We will be having a final on Wednesday. 10 questions. More details to come.

Day 39 Recap - Tuesday, October 29th

posted Oct 30, 2013, 5:16 AM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Today was a day of reminders.  Here are the items currently on your plate:

Big Project Presentations - Due at Friday, November 1st.
Revisions and rehearsals will take place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Investing a Dollar Writeup/Reflection - Due by the end of class on Wednesday, November 6th
Please refer to the mini project guide here.

Any missing work or redo needs to be in by the end of class on Wednesday, November 6th.

During our final time, we will have a Final Reflection.  There will be more on this as the date approaches.  I can tell you the expectation will be on writing clear sentences and quality paragraphs with support, describing and defending what you've learned this term.  This isn't something I want you to spend hours studying for. I want to know what you recall without having to study.

Day 38 Recap - Monday, October 28th

posted Oct 28, 2013, 1:41 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hello everybody!

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend. Today we talked about good presentation principles. We started off with a video poking fun at the ways we commonly use PowerPoint.

Then, we discussed how we can make better presentations. Things like avoiding audible pauses, showing enthusiasm, knowing the audience, and dressing the part.  Eye contact, volume level, and preparedness are all hugely important too.

The rest of the time was work time on completing these presentations. Tomorrow technically the final day to work on your actual presentation, while Wednesday and Thursday should be used as revision/rehearsal days. Friday is the big finale, with guests in to enjoy your presentations!

Day 36 and 37 Recap - Tuesday October 22nd and Wednesday, October 23rd

posted Oct 28, 2013, 4:55 AM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Tuesday, we discussed predicting the future, and how the past influences the future, and how context is so important.  You need to be able to use the numbers you dig up in your research (past stock prices, profits, price/earnings ratio) to make some inferences about where that stock will be headed in the future.

Wednesday, we had a discussion about why invest. I tried roleplaying the best I could as someone who wasn't too interested in investing their money.  Some of the students, especially Tyrel and Phil, did an excellent job coming up with good points as to why I should invest, and how I could go about doing that.

Next week Friday is the big presentation day. I'll be helping out with crafting great presentations on Monday. Have a wonderful long weekend.

Day 35 Recap - Monday, October 21st

posted Oct 21, 2013, 1:29 PM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us   [ updated Oct 21, 2013, 1:31 PM ]

Hello everybody!  Today we played a little poker (as an object lesson), clarified the project directions further, and many of you worked very hard. We also looked at an article that reveals that our snapchats may not be as quick to disappear as we'd like to believe.

The poker game was an analogy for investing in stocks.  Starting with a bad hand in poker is like investing in penny stocks or commodities. You may get lucky, and could win big. However, the odds are stacked against you. On the opposite hand, having pocket pairs is like a stock that has been doing well and you feel very confident. Keep in mind, the information you get from the flop, turn, and river is like the research you would be doing to determine if something was a good investment. Using research is a great way to manage your risk. If you saw the flop and had nothing going, why would you continue throwing money away?

Tomorrow and Wednesday will be continued work on the project, trying hard to wrap things up. I'll do my best to bring in activities as I can to help you complete things.

Day 34 Recap - Friday, October 21st

posted Oct 21, 2013, 5:04 AM by Gauthierj@denmark.k12.wi.us

Hello everybody!

Shark attack!  Friday, we watched "Shark Tank" while we worked. I gave you the option of simply watching without working on your project, keeping in mind that the timeline hasn't changed.  Research and content should all be gathered by the end of class on Wednesday.  Then, there will be two days to create your presentation, and a couple days to practice and revise.  The final presentations will be taking place on Friday, November 1st.

The big topic from Friday was the thought process outline - how should I go about tackling this project? This is part of a plan to really give some structure to those of you that struggle with planning out a project. However, the trade off is you'll have less time to accomplish things in class.

Monday we'll have a new focus, and get one step closer to providing great investment advice. In the end, we really just need to know what it takes to make a good investment!
