On November 5, 2015, DeKalb County Central United School District receives state grant for propane school buses Award will bring over $35,000 to the district and 5 new propane-fueled school buses.

Waterloo, IN — Today, DeKalb County Central United School District announced the receipt of a $35,625 grant from the Indiana Office of Energy Development for the purchase of five propane-fueled school buses.

The grant will offset the incremental costs for the propane buses. Renee Dawson, Director of Transportation for DeKalb Central Schools, said, “The district opted for propane buses because of the lower fuel costs and lower emissions.” “DeKalb County Central United School District is an established energy efficiency and sustainable best practices leader in Indiana. Beginning in 2004, the District has worked hard to save money through energy efficient upgrades, resulting in over $8 million in savings. Through this grant, we hope to continue our efforts to improve our school bus fleet and demonstrate our commitment to be good stewards to our students, community, and the planet.” said Dr. Sherry Grate, Superintendent of DeKalb County Central United School District.

“Propane AutoGas LLC is a proud partner of DeKalb Central Schools and their efforts to reduce emissions for the health and safety of the children in our community,” Mark Gibson, president of Propane AutoGas LLC, said yesterday. “We are so pleased that we were able to help the DeKalb transportation department apply and receive this grant. We look forward to working closely with the school district and the Office of Energy Development as they improve this fleet of school buses.”

In the 2014-15 school year, the district ran 55 buses on 60 bus routes. The district transports over 3300 students daily, accumulating more than 1 million miles during the school year.

DeKalb County Central United School District is located in DeKalb County, Indiana. The school district serves a rural community of 3,734 students. The mission of DeKalb Central Schools is to develop socially responsible students who are literate, academically successful, engaged in all aspects of their education, and prepared for success in the 21st century.
