Welcome to English Language Arts!

Hello, and welcome to team Challenger Point! I am ecstatic and honored to be your teacher!

What to expect...

Each quarter we will be exploring a new unit. All of the units connect to our current topics and will vary between fiction and nonfiction. Students will be introduced to a myriad of short stories, poetry, biographies, and novellas. Topics will include social justice, inspirational figures, historical moments that shaped our world today. Additionally, we will focus on three styles of writing, which will be narrative, expository/informative, and argumentative/persuasive. Furthermore, we will strengthen research techniques, using databases, correctly citing sources, as well as presentation techniques.

Advanced Language Arts...

Advanced English Language Arts utilizes the curriculum from the College of William and Mary Center for Gifted Education, which includes classic novels such as The Diary of Anne Frank, along with several more short stories, poems, and biographies. This class dives deeper into critical thinking techniques, problem-solving skills, advanced writing skills, and a critical reading lens.

About me:

I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, but my family and I have happily called Parker, CO. our home for over a decade. My husband and I have three incredibly kind children, Jack (23), Carson (18), and Kennedy (16). Our oldest is currently serving our country, and we couldn't be more proud. During a typical week, we stay busy supporting our other teens with their sports and academics. We are an incredibly active family; however, when I have downtime you will find me in the gym or cuddling with my two rescue dogs, Lyra and Maizy. In the fall, you will find me at all the CU Buff football games!

I don't remember a day in my life where I wasn't thinking about writing practices or talking about the latest novel. In fact, I wrote my first short story when I was in the third grade! I followed my passion for writing and literature and graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver with a B.A. in English and a minor in Secondary Education. I am currently completing my M.D.Ed. in Literacy, specializing in Reading and Writing through the University of Colorado.

I believe that great achievements come with hard work, and I strive to have my students set goals and conquer each one. I believe in encouraging individual interest to allow students to explore their own, personal passion.

"Always do what you are afraid to do."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson
