Message from Principal Pekarek

Week 14 - 11/19/21

Hello Sand Creek Families!

Thanksgiving break is here and we are very close to the mid-year point. The time is flying! I will be asking teachers and staff to turn off all email notifications so that they can use this coming week to recharge and re energize. They will be checking them again on Monday morning, November 29th. Thank you for helping them take this much needed break as our staff gives their all to our SCE students.

Apple Award Nominations

The links are open and the Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2022 Apple Awards. Please let your love for your amazing teachers be known and consider filling out a nomination for them! You can find the links here to nominate.

I hope that you are surrounded by people you love during this holiday season and you get to spend quality time with your family and/or friends. I am looking forward to disconnecting and plugging in with my own family. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving and we’ll see you back at school on the 29th!

Proud to be an Eagle!

Counselor Corner

Dear SCE Families,

During the month of November students are learning about and practicing Gratitude. Gratitude means pausing to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water, friends, family… Research suggests that gratitude can increase feelings of happiness and empathy, and can even improve your physical health. Read this article for more information. You will also find some ideas to teach gratitude to your children at home!

To help all of us at Sand Creek practice gratitude, every classroom has a Gratitude Pumpkin. Each day a student writes something they are grateful for on the pumpkin. The students are also learning to feel grateful for who they are and for what each of them has to offer. We are grateful for every student at Sand Creek and for what they bring to our community!

Mental Health Resources

  • Colorado now provides every child in the state with a free mental health evaluation and 3 free counseling sessions. Here is the link with more information: https://imattercolorado.org/

  • Douglas County School District Counselors have teamed with Dr. Scott Cypers to create a video series to help parents understand how to help their children with Anxiety.  This series will be ongoing throughout the remainder of the school year and a new video will be released every few weeks.  These 20-30 minute video videos are designed to provide parents with an understanding of anxiety and provide some actionable tools to help their children.  Dr. Cypers is a nationally recognized expert on child and adolescent anxiety and is the director of stress and anxiety at Johnson Depression Center.

The Giving Tree

Dear Sand Creek Community,

If you would like to participate and become a sponsor, please select an item below, purchase the item, wrap and return the item to the front desk with a tag that has the corresponding letter/number on it in the description  (ex:  B 1) and deliver it to the main office by Monday, December 13th

Holiday Giving Tree Sign-up

We will also be adding gift cards to our Giving Tree this year in order to provide a holiday meal for our families. You may bring gift cards of any denomination from King Soopers, Target, Wal-Mart or Safeway in order to help provide a meal for our families.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the School Social Worker, Elizabeth Aznar at eaznar@dcsdk12.org

We appreciate our community coming together to help provide a wonderful holiday for all of our students!
