Look What's Happening in Kindergarten

This week we have been reading books about owls.  We filled out our owl schema chart and read nonfiction books to help us add to our new learning. We used Eagle Eye and students learned about Lips the Fish. Lips the Fish gets our lips ready to say the first sound in a word. We ended the week by reading Hoot Owl: Master of Disguise. Students disguised their owls and wrote about it.

Reading Skills:

  • Predict- Readers use their schema (what they already know) and take clues from the text and make a smart guess about what will happen in the story

Reading Strategies:

  • Eagle Eye- Look at the picture for clues

  • Lips the Fish- Say the first sound

This week, students worked on following the writing workshop procedures. Students did the following: thought of an idea (brainstormed as a class), drew a picture, checked our A+ coloring chart, then labeled pictures, wrote a word or wrote a sentence about their drawing. Once all of these steps were complete, students began another piece. Students also practiced sharing their writing. Each day is a different type of sharing. On Thursday, students did partner sharing.


We continued to work through our first topic in Envisions. Students created their owl and we used these owls to solve math problems. Ex: How many eyes do three owls have?. We ended the week by having students solve a word problem using owls.

You Can Tie Your Shoes!
Your child gets a new pair of shoelaces when he/she shows me he/she can tie his/her shoes!  So start practicing!

We focus not only on physical health but also emotional health.  Being able to calm our brains and bodies is essential for learning and overall well being.  We practice breathing to facilitate this process.  We use calming jars, rainbow breathing and belly breathing as calming techniques.  We are implementing yoga moves to help us with focus, strength and calmness.
