The Hunger Games

Written By: Suzanne Collins

Article By: Robin

Personally, I think this first book of the series is one of Suzanne Collins’ best. But, if you aren’t a person who likes action, romance, thrills and spills, this isn’t a book for you. Word to the wise, many characters don’t make it to the next book.

The main character, Katniss Everdeen, is brave, unpredictable, and pretty. She is brave because she goes into the woods illegally and hunts. She is also the one who feeds or provides for her whole family. She is unpredictable because she can shoot her arrow without a sound from behind someone. She is of course beautiful because all of the boys like her and wink or get a little too close.

Peeta Mellark, who is a fellow tribute (competitor in the Hunger Games) with Katniss, and a kind of guard for her, is very moody. But just because he is moody doesn’t mean he isn’t caring and loving for Katniss. Peeta is unpredictable, but he is Katniss’s dream boy.

Lastly, Gale Hawthorne. He starts out as Katniss’s hunting buddy, but throughout the series, they become closer and closer together. He is also very rebellious against the Capitol and that gets worse and worse throughout the series.

This whole book is about the Hunger Games, right? So, I bet you’re wondering what the Hunger Games actually are. The Hunger Games are an annual event where two kids from each of the 12 Districts get picked to go into an arena to compete in a fight to the death. 24 tributes go in, only one comes out.

I don’t want to be a spoiler, so you have to read the book to find out what happens to Katniss, Peeta, and Gale.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

~ Kaela

If you like books that have adventure, excitement, and keep you on the edge of your seat, you'll like this. It is all about Harry Potter.  It’s all up to Harry and his two friends, Ron the wimpy/funny one, and Hermione, the smart one, to  save Hogwarts once again.

Choo! Choo! All aboard the Hogwarts Express! As Harry starts his fourth year at Hogwarts, and they get a new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher named Mad-Eye-Moody. He has a magical eye that spins and can see through things. Moody is mysterious; he keeps taking this drink non stop and twitches when he does. He keeps a very watchful eye on Harry and keeps saving him from getting hurt.

The Triwizard Tournament is a thrilling challenge that only the very lucky ones can survive. Two other schools come to compete in the Tournament: Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. The Goblet of Fire is a mysterious goblet that gets to decide who gets to be in the Triwizard Tournament. You have to be at least 17 to compete, but the Goblet of Fire has a mind of its own and chooses Harry who is only 14.   There are three different tasks. The first one is something scary. The second one is LOUD. The third one is... well you’ll find out. There is a very dark secret in The Triwizard Tournament; people aren’t themselves anymore.

Then, something awful happens during The Triwizard Tournament. In the confusion of the third task Harry’s scar hurts worse than ever and there are a lot of Death Eaters, workers for You-Know-Who; they wear masks that cover their identity. To find out what this dark
secret is and what happens to Harry, you'll have to read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Katniss Fights for Her Life Again

By Gatlin

The amazing, thrilling book Catching Fire is a great, action packed book.  Catching Fire is the second book in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.  It’s about Katniss Everdeen facing another challenge you would never believe could happen.

One of my favorite parts about this book is that you never expect what's going to happen.  The unpredictable moments make you want to keep reading it.  Most of the events are bad but the good ones are amazing.  It is great how the writer thinks of those things.

Many of the characters from the first book: Primrose, Peeta, Gale, Ms. Everdeen, Hazelle, Caesar Flickerman, Haymitch, Effie Trinket, return in Catching Fire.  One of my favorites is Gale because he has known Katniss for almost his whole life and he treats her nicely.  I also like Haymitch because he can become really funny in the book.

In the the Hunger Games series, it’s all from Katniss’s point of view.  I always thought she had deep thoughts about her life and the author does a good job of showing you how she thinks.  Her life seems sad so that’s why I think the author wanted to have Katniss think deep thoughts.

One of my favorite things about Catching Fire is that it has a lot of catchy phrases that everybody will love.  One of my favorites is “in that bleeding jungle.”  A girl named Johanna Mason says that and she is one of my favorite characters.  The book also has a lot of funny lines from Haymitch.  I think Haymitch can be one of the funniest characters in the book.

You should read this book for all of the action, characters, Katniss’s thinking, and the phrases. But make sure that you read The Hunger Games first.

Flying through the Air With Flyte

If you liked the book Magyk and you like flying then I recommend this spectacular book for you! It is about three people: Wolfboy, the princess Jenna, and her beloved brother, Septimus, who is the apprentice to the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia. Septimus also owns a dragon named Spit Fyre. All three team up to go against the apprentice’s and princess’s evil brother Simon. Simon has the flyte charm and when he is airborne, he uses Thunder Flashes that looks like lightning, and scares people. The flyte charm helps people fly.

In the beginning of the story, Simon takes the Princess Jenna to the badlands. Septimus and Wolfboy, a tracker who lived with the Wolverines for a few years, try to save Jenna.  Meanwhile, Jenna escapes on Simon’s horse and races to the Port, a known meeting place. Not knowing Jenna’s location, Septimus and Wolfboy go to a fortune for help. They are able to find Jenna at the Port and then go to Aunt Zelda’s cottage. Simon shows up unannounced, and he throws a powerful thunder flash at the group of friends. A battle ensues.  Wolfboy throws a rock at Simon that hits him square in the eye. Simon leaves with severe injuries.

To get home, the three friends board a dragon boat.   after some close calls in the sky, they make it back safely to the castle. Septimus is able to take the flyte charm from Simon, and with no powers, Simon never bothers them again. This is an action packed book series of seven, with more to come. The author Angie Sage, always makes kids want to read on. Check them out!

Breathe

~ by, Caleigh

This story is an intriguing and frightening tale. It is based in London and tells the story of four ghost children. The suspense kept me reading page after page. Even the chapter titles are frightening and make you want to read one after another.

The ghost children who live in the creepy walls are Ann, Oliver, Charlie, and Gwyneth. Sarah (the mother) and Jack (the son) have just moved in. Jack feels there’s danger in the house. He has asthma and can literally feel the difference in the air he breathes. He has seen visions of ghost people inside and outside of the house. Jack’s mom doesn’t believe him, so she has to discover it for herself.

There are more ghostly things in this story than you can ever imagine. The details are so realistic that you can sense Jack’s fear and picture the characters in your head. It is as if you’re actually living in the story along side the ghost children. With every turn of the page, your eyes widen in anticipation of what’s next.

Breathe, w

gives you a chill, with shrieks and screams when you least expect it, as Jack and Sarah get to know their new house and the ghost children.

A Best Selling Book “Hatchet”

By Gatlin

Hatchet
is an amazing, thrilling book that I would suggest to a friend or a family member.  It is about  thirteen year old Brian Robeson who is on a plane to visit his father.  He is alone on the plane with the pilot when the plane crashes and the pilot dies. Brian is alone in the Canadian wilderness with just a windbreaker and a hatchet to survive.  He is scared and misses his parents.  It is one of the best books I have ever read!  Everyone I know who has read Hatchet thinks it is a great book.  I would give Hatchet a four and a half star out of five rating.  There are some twists and turns in this book which makes it a great story.  Some parts are sad or intense, but that is the way of the book and that is one of the reasons I enjoyed the plot of the book.

The book starts off with Brian on the plane.  He thinks about how his parents got the divorce and he goes up to the pilot to talk.  The pilot shows Brian how to fly the plane and, in a random moment, the pilot has a heart attack.  Brian tries to fly the plane himself, but it crashes into a lake.

Brian gets out of the plane and realizes he has the Hatchet on his belt.  He drinks too much lake water and gets sick.  He finds a rock shelter by a lake to live in and spends long nights living in there.  One day, he goes to get berries and sees a bear.  Luckily, the bear does not harm Brian.  After he sees the bear,  Brian makes a bow and arrow to hunt.  He finds turtle eggs to eat.  A few days later, a moose comes and attacks Brian, breaking his ribs. That night, a tornado crashes down and destroys Brian’s things and put part of the plane in the lake.

Will Brian ever get saved?  Find out when you read the book.
That is the exciting story of Hatchet, I would recommend it to anyone.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Katie

The action packed book makes your imagination go berserk.   It is all about Harry (of course) and his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, going on exciting adventures.

Hogwarts’s new teacher Professor Lupin is the defense against the dark arts teacher.  He teaches the students about every creature you could imagine, or almost every creature. When Harry exposed to the dementors Professor Lupin comes in handy teaching him some tricks up his sleeve. But little did you know he is hiding a BIG and hairy secret.

Do you want a cup of butter beer? The students have theirs, when they first visit Hogsmeade.  They need to have their parents or guardian fill out a form but you know the Dursleys would never do that for Harry. However, he finds a magical way to get to Hogsmeade without anybody noticing.

A convicted murder in Azkaban has escaped and now seems to be after Harry. Azkaban is the wizard jail or prison that is guarded by dementors. Dementors are hooded creatures that suck your soul. Because Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban the dementors come to guard hogwarts and seriously mess with Harry. That’s where Lupin comes in and helps.

Harry is known to go on dangerous journeys so if you want to know how this one ends up read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!
