    DCSD Early Childhood Snack Policy

  • updated 12/10/13

Snack time is an important component of the preschool day. Parents will be asked to send a nutritional snack for their child. Snacks need to be pre-packaged or prepared from commercial sources, in compliance with the Department of Public Health. If your child has any food allergies, please contact the teaching staff prior to the first day of school, so they may inform the nurse covering your school.

This means that in classrooms that have students with life threatening food allergies, we will have to turn away any snacks containing those food products for the safety of our students.  Therefore, please only pack snacks that are free of the allergen that would threaten our children.

While in preschool, we are often practicing our sharing; however, snack time is not the time to do so at school.  This is essential for all of our students to learn in preparation for elementary school and beyond, where this is also the policy.

Birthday and special occasion snacks are always welcome for all children, they will however have to be store bought with the ingredients clearly legible.  Keep in mind that we are happy to have plain, fresh fruit and vegetable snacks, as well as non-food options!

Drop Off & Pick Up Guidelines
Bring your child to school a few minutes before the beginning of class (8:20 for AM 12:35 for PM).

Park in the "main" parking lot (please DO NOT park in the bus loop lot off of Hilltop) and cross, using the crosswalk, to the school.  Go left on the sidewalk and circle around the school to the first side door facing west (see school map attached). The preschool teachers will meet you at this door.

Sign in on your classroom sheet on the rolling cart brought out by your preschool teachers.  Please sign with your complete name and include a phone number where you can be reached each day. Say goodbye outside of the school and the teachers will walk the children to the classroom.

Please bring a backpack with a change of clothes (including socks and shoes), a lunchbox with a snack, and a water bottle.  Please label all items with your child’s name (especially the backpack and water bottle).

Meet outside the west side door a couple of minutes before the end of the day (11:05 for AM 3:20 for PM). We will walk the children to this door for pickup. Please have your ID with you. You are always welcome to visit the classroom.  If you would like to visit your child’s classroom, please enter through the main entrance and sign in at the front desk. We will also ask you to sign in in the classroom on our preschool visitor sheet. Then, sign out at the front desk when you leave.

Thank you for sharing your child with us this year!

    Delay/Closure Information

DCSD will cancel morning preschool programs, when District’s schools are placed on a 90-minute delay.  If the delay is not District-wide, only preschool sessions in the affected region(s) will be cancelled.

As always, when the District decides to close schools, both morning and afternoon sessions will be cancelled, again, in the impacted region(s).

Notices about District delays and closures are available on our website at www.dcsdk12.org, its mobile app and social media channels.

The District will use the following methods to notify parents about weather-related school schedule changes:
    • Local television and radio broadcasts starting at 5:00 a.m.
    • District website: www.dcsdk12.org for the most current and accurate schedule. Information will be updated by 5:00 a.m.
    • Weather hotline: 303-387-SNOW (7669). Closure and delay information will be updated by 5 a.m.
