The Automotive Technologies course sequence aligns with Colorado Community College Automotive Technology courses . These courses will earn both high school credit and community college credit towards a 2-year A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) and certificate degree program.

Automotive Technologies 1:
Students must enroll in Auto. Tech. 1 & 2 during the same year. Within Auto. Tech. 1, several automotive systems are covered with a strong emphasis on safety and participation. Students will receive theory-based classroom instruction and hands-on training with all of the required equipment for a career in the automotive industry. Coursework is designed to apply to several post-secondary automotive programs. This course includes but is not limited to: shop safety and tools, basic electrical concepts, vehicle maintenance, automotive electrical system fundamentals, onboard vehicle diagnostics and repair, basic steering and suspension and OSHA/EPA regulations and requirements.This class is designed to meet the course requirements for a secondary education NATEF certified program.

Automotive Technologies 2:
Auto. Tech. 2 applies all knowledge from the Automotive Technology I class and expands on several systems of automotive repair. This course is made up of more than 60% hands-on training. This course includes shop safety and tools, advanced electrical concepts, precision measurement, advanced onboard computer diagnostics and troubleshooting, hydraulic and brake systems, vehicle drivability and performance. This class is designed to meet the course requirements for a secondary educationNATEF certified program.

Automotive Technologies 3:
Students must enroll in Auto. Tech. 3 & 4 during the same year.Auto. Tech. 3 expands to in-depth training on diagnostics and system tests for engine performance and drivability. This course splits time between the classroom and the hands-on shop environment. Students specifically explore shop safety and specialty tools, advanced electrical concepts and testing, suspension systems, advanced brakes including traction control, ABS systems, and manufacturer specific training procedures. This class is designed to meet the course requirements for a secondary education NATEF certified program.

Automotive Technologies 4:
Auto. Tech. 4 expands to in-depth training and advanced techniques including: brakes, vehicle suspension and steering systems, vehicle wheel alignment, advanced wheel and tire concepts, system diagnostic analysis, vehicle emissions systems, dynamometer testing, and manufacturer specific electrical systems. Emphasis will be placed on career exploration throughout the industry and students will complete tasks preparing them to successfully pass ASE exams. Additionally, students are provided multiple opportunities to explore and pursue post-secondary education in the automotive technology industry and NATEF areas not covered within Ponderosa’s curriculum. Students will also be introduced to several post-secondary training opportunities. This class is designed to meet the course requirements for a secondary education NATEF certified program.These courses prepare students for entry-level positions in the four areas taught within the curriculum (electrical and electronics, brakes, suspension and steering, and engine performance).

The purpose of the Automotive Technology I course is to prepare students with the basic theory and skills required for a position within the automotive industry. Students will spend more than half of their time in the active lab. Students will become familiar with the automobile and the numerous job opportunities within today’s job market. An active Skills USA chapter is sponsored by the class. Students are expected to join and participate in Skills USA activities. Internships are available through the AYES program for students interested in making automotive a career. The areas covered within this course are as follows: Introduction to Shop, Tire and Wheel Service, Tool Usage, Preventative Maintenance, Auto Transmission / Transaxle Service, Electrical Fundamentals, Battery, Starting & Charging, U-Joint and Axle Shaft Service, Introduction to Brakes, Intro to Heating & Air Conditioning, Steering and Suspension, Wheel Alignment, Specialized Scan Tools, Automotive Computers, Driveability Diagnosis, Engine Repair & Rebuild and Welding. 

Automotive Technologies 2 is a more in-depth extension of Automotive Technologies 1.
