What is bullying? DCSD defines bullying as: any written, verbal or pictorial expression, physical act or gesture, or a pattern thereof by a student that is intended to cause distress upon one or more students and is sufficiently severe that it has the effect of:
creating an intimidating, hostile, or significantly offensive environment for the learning or performance of school-sanctioned activities of any student; or
unreasonably interfering with or disrupting the educational performance or participation in any other school-sanctioned activity of any student.
What is NOT bullying? Peer conflict, teasing where everyone is participating, fighting, a mean moment, a dirty look, or accidentally bumping into someone. Mutual conflict where both parties participate is not considered bullying.
Physical Bullying: hurting someone’s body or possessions
Relational Bullying: hurting someone’s reputation or relationships, such as by excluding them
Verbal Bullying: saying or writing mean things about someone
Cyberbullying: involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm others

Report or help report bullying

The child reporting wants to keep themselves or others safe.
The child reporting is concerned about safety.
The problem is important and urgent.
Someone may be hurt or in danger.
An adult is needed to help solve the problem
The child tattling wants to get someone else in trouble or avoid blame.
The child tattling may have something to gain, such as attention or popularity.
No one is hurt or in danger.
The problem can be solved without an adult.
The child threatens to tell on another in order to control the other child.
