Powell WINS Rising Star Award and $25,000 Grant
Four Schools Honored By Fight For Children

Another Award for Powell Elementary School

Posted by: "Larkin" lt@stoneofhope.org   larkintackett

Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:46 am (PDT)

Fight For Children, an independent non-profit organization committed to improving education in DC schools, today announced the winners of its
2012 Quality Schools Initiative. Powell Elementary School, a DPCS school serving preschool through 4th grade (and adding 5th next year!), was
awarded a Rising Star award and a $25,000 grant.

Now in its fifth year, Fight For Children's Quality Schools Initiative encourages exploration, discussion, and implementation of high-quality programs that can improve student achievement in DC public, charter, and independent schools. Its two main objectives are to acknowledge and identify quality schools and to share their best practices so that they may be replicated and expanded to benefit a broader student population.

Powell Elementary was cited for its bilingual early learning and Tools of the Mind
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/dc-school-reform-targets-\early-lessons/2011/11/04/gIQAGZ2VCN_story.html> , an early childhood
program with and emphasis on self-regulation and interpersonal skills.

As a result, The Washington Post wrote a great article about the award here:

Here are a few excerpts from Principal Docal's acceptance speech about Powell's success:

The school has grown from serving 210 children in 2009 to 376 projected for next school year with the addition of fifth grade. Powell is
supported by a parent organization called POPPS, Parents Organized for the Power of Powell, and have 76% participation in school events. We
also have great partners including the USDA, NWCC, Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs, Latin American Youth Center, Americorps, La Trenza
Leadership, and Perkins Coie law firm.

We are excited to let you know that this collaborative effort has resulted in the accomplishment of many notable things including the

* expanding our early childhood program and were the pilot for Tools of the Mind;
* Revamped our bilingual program which is at full capacity.
* Being at the highest level of math achievement since 2007
* Powell's median math and ELA scores have moved significantly Powell's median student outperforms 75% of other district students in math and 70% in reading.
* Decreased truancy rate to 0% from 11% and enjoy 98% attendance.
* Currently, we are planning to undergo modernization, renovation and expansion.

Congrats Powell!
