Project Overview

Lawrence E. Boone Elementary (renamed, but originally Benjamin Orr Elementary School), built in 1974, was an open space school located in the Fairlawn neighborhood of Washington, DC. The 4-story classroom wing was shaped like a triangle and most of its windows faced only into the court yard. Open space is a challenging educational environment for today’s teachers and students and DCPS is in the process of enclosing or replacing all these schools. The building had a capacity for less than 400 students with a current enrollment of approximately 426 students. Current design guidelines require that rooms be enclosed, and classrooms expanded to provide for a 21st century learning environment--900-1200 sf per classroom.

This project is a replacement of the existing school for a capacity for 492 students. The existing building was 75,500 square feet. The educational specification required a school of approximately 68,000 SF to be constructed as a new building. The new building was designed more efficiently in an arc shape that creates a large courtyard playground, with 3 stories for better student flow. The trash/recycle/loading area has been relocated from the corner of 22nd St. and Prout St. to access off the alley for increased student safety from large trucks and improved neighborhood aesthetics. The gym/auditorium is now a separate space from the cafeteria, creating more flexibility for the school program. As an acknowledgement that the open space school did have some advantages, every classroom has a wall of windows in to the corridor and each floor features a commons area for informal learning.

The student swing plan dictated that classes would continue in the old building while the new building was being constructed. Now that the new building is complete, Skanska has focused their work on demolishing the existing building, and constructing a playground, basketball court, athletic field, and parking lot in its place.
