Welcome to the Database & Data Mining Lab (Big Data Lab) at the POSTECH. We have been focusing on big data, databases, mining, and AI related research. We are trying to publish solid papers in prestigious top-tier database (SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE) and data mining/machine learning conferences (SIGKDD, ICML, NIPS). 

Our goal is to build scalable, intelligent Big data systems that effectivly and efficiently deal with Big data. Most of Big data is unstructured data, and thus, it is difficult to handle. We are building a system for converting unstructured data into semi-structured data in a graph form so that it can be easily handled in our parallel graph engine. We are also building an intelligent system to interact with humans.

Current research topics include:

  • Natural Language Interface to Database (NLIDB) which translates natural language questions into database queries 
  • Self-tuning DBMS using deep learning 
  • Large-scale video query processing 
  • Parallel computation systems for big data analysis on modern hardware: from micro-level (multi-core/GPU) parallelism to macro-level (shared-nothing, i.e. Cloud) parallelism
  • Large-scale graph computation systems (handling social networks, brain networks, chemical compounds)
  • Intelligent computation systems for structured and dark data (DB+Natural Language processing)
