Spirit of Giving by Dayton 4th and 5th Graders Felt in SMHC Emergency Department

BIDDEFORD, Maine – March 4, 2016 - An Emergency Department visit can be scary for a patient at any age, but it’s especially hard for children. Thanks to the generosity of the 4th and 5th graders of Dayton Consolidated School, children who need to visit the Emergency Department at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) will receive a new book or toy to help ease their fear.

“I was so impressed by the Dayton Consolidated School students’ generosity and their willingness to make this sort of donation to help our pediatric patients,” said SMHC Development Specialist Lee Cote. “We are very grateful that they choose SMHC to receive this gift.”

“The teachers wanted to show the students that they can make a difference in the community and also what it means to follow through on a project from start to finish,” said Jennifer Kurkul, mother of one of the students and physical therapist at SMHC. “As a parent I am very proud of all the hard work they did on this project.”

The students made bookmarks and sold them as part of their One Bookmark Matters campaign. They raised over $315 and voted to purchase books and toys to donate to the Emergency Department at SMHC. The students delivered the items in person and also got to take a tour of the Emergency Department.

“This student-centered project inspired many great discussions,” added Kim Sampietro, principal at Dayton Consolidated School. “This is one of those lessons that goes beyond the books and will stick with them for many years to come.”
