Message from the Principal:

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Westside Middle School Academy is committed to providing all of our students with a high-quality educational experience that prepares them for the future.  Our district curriculum is aligned to Connecticut's Core Standards in mathematics and ELA, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  In addition, we firmly believe that our project-based learning environment prepares students for real-world experiences while providing an engaging learning environment.

By law, Connecticut schools are required to administer specific assessments annually to measure student progress.  At the middle school level, ELA and mathematics use the Smarter Balanced Assessment (Grades 6-8), and science uses the NGSS Assessment (Grade 8 only).  This year the NGSS is a field test, so the State will not report results to the District or families.  However, the State Department of Education does hold the school accountable for student participation on all of the State-mandated assessments.

Westside Middle School Academy will administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment from May 1 to May 7 (one 75-minute testing block per day), and the 8th Grade NGSS from May 14-16.  The assessments are administered on district computers.  In all of these assessments, additional supports are available for students with special needs, as determined by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan.

The Smarter Balance and NGSS assessments are an important way to showcase the great work our teachers and students complete at our school. Each and every child's performance is important to us.  I kindly ask that you encourage your child to work to the best of his or her ability on the assessments, get a good night's sleep prior, and approach the assessments with a positive attitude.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Many thanks,
Dr. Frank LaBanca, Principal
