When your computer not longer works- Try using Target Mode to create a backup

posted Jun 2, 2015, 9:08 AM by Natalie Koehler

When your computer not longer works there is one way to try and recover your data by restarting the bad computer in target mode. Target mode allows you to use another computer to load your data as an external hard drive. To do this you must be able to use firewire on both computers. Turn off both computers and connect the firewire. Once they are connected  sign into the good computer normally. Hold down the power button on the bad computer while holding down the T button.

You should see the bad computer in the finder window of the good computer. Move your data to that new computer to create a backup.

Malware Pop-ups

posted May 13, 2015, 7:47 AM by Natalie Koehler

What to try...

go to > ~/Library/Application Support  -  delete the Google folder
go to > ~/Library/Preferences  -  delete any file that says google

Sometimes it also requires deleting:
~/Library/Safari
~/Library/com.apple.safari.plist (or any file that says safari)

Restart computer for changes to take effect.

Tip: put the pop-up message right into Google or Bing and find out what other people have done.

Your New Promethean Board- Some initial training

posted May 12, 2015, 11:41 AM by Natalie Koehler

Great news about the boards being installed in your classrooms. There are lots of great resources on Promethean Planet  that you should start checking out. You will want to sign up for a Promethean Planet free account. At Promethean Planet you can also find great training videos and flipcharts that you can download and use right away. Flip charts are like interactive powerpoints that other teachers have created and shared on promethean planet.

You can also check out this website that was created for a DPS beginner training session last May. On the bottom of the page you will see a EAS basic training flipchart that you can download. This walks you through many of the basic tools you need to learn when you first get a promethean board. This website was created for more advanced users in an intermediate session I offered.

Finally, SpringBoard Media is my favorite youtube channel for find training videos. This is a link to their Beginner Training Videos.  They also offer intermediate and advanced training videos.

Creating a iTunes account without a credit card

posted May 5, 2015, 5:57 AM by Natalie Koehler   [ updated May 5, 2015, 5:57 AM ]

Teachers with iPads are required to create an iTunes account using their school email address as their username. To create an iTunes account without a credit card follow these steps.

1) Open itunes on your laptop
2) Go to Store
3) Make sure you are not signed in to an iTunes account.
4) Search the itunes store for any free app. I usually use the Kindle app. Select Get
5) When you get the pop-up to sign in to your iTunes account. Select Create account.
6) Follow the steps to create an iTunes account.
7) You will get an email to confirm you account. Once that is confirmed you are ready to use your iTunes account.

Using Apple TV with an Apple laptop

AppleTV is only compatible only with MacBook Airs (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer) with Mac OS X 10.8 or newer. It is not compatiblle with the elementary teachers using the white macbooks with 10.6.8.

Select AirPlay Mirroring
icon in your top menu bar. Make sure your laptop is set to use Danbury-Wireless. If the apple TV is on and connected you will see the apple TV name come up under that icon. Select the name of the apple TV you want to connect to. On the projector screen you will see a four digit code. Enter those four digits on your laptop. The icon will turn blue when you are connected to an apple TV.

If the AirPlay Mirroring icon is not in your top menu bar, you can turn it on by going to apple menu>System Preferences > Displays:

To turn off AirPlay Mirroring, select "Disconnect AirPlay Display" in the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.

Using Apple TV with an iPad

Swipe from the bottom of the ipad screen to access the control center.
Tap icon.
Select the name of the AppleTV you wish to connect to.
Enter the password as displayed on the projection screen.
Slide the “Mirroring” switch on the iPad to “ON.”
Your display should now appear on the projection screen.
