STEM Career of the Month

  • Food Scientist
A food scientist is a person that works with agricultural products after they are grown and harvested but before they are consumed.  They apply their knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, and other scientists to improve the quality and decrease the cost of food products!  Most food scientists work in private industry, helping to make sure that food products remain properly preserved, designing packaging for products, or developing new ways of producing products at lower costs.

Most food science jobs require at least a bachelor's degree, with master's and doctoral degrees required for higher positions.  The median salary of a food scientist is around $54,000 for the country, though higher positions in the top 10% of earners can make $97,000 or more yearly.
