Note to Parents/Guardians: Welcome Back! I am excited to be your child's teacher and look forward to meeting you! In order to ensure a smooth school year, please check your child's planner daily for notes home, school correspondence and assigned daily homework. Daily Math and Language Arts assignments and homework are individualized and noted in each student's planner. Also, please feel free to call me at 815-744-6166, extension 2507, email ivelasco@d88a.org or leave a note in your child's planner. I will respond at the earliest possible time.

Current Social Studies Unit - 1st Quarter                                                       
7th and 8th grade: Book: America's Story (adapted book), Units 1-3
Students are instructed in a small group with a modified/adapted curriculum that closely matches the content in the 7th and 8th grade curriculum.
www.sheppardsoftware.com is an excellent resource for reinforcing geography skills. Students can play games and view tutorials on US Presidents, US Government and USA Map skills.

Current Science Unit - 1st Quarter
7th and 8th grade: Book,
Each chapter has 4-6 sections and guided reading and study guides are used for each section. Students are provided with a guided study skills packet for each section.
Students are instructed in a small group with a modified/adapted curriculum that closely matches the content in the 7th and 8th grade curriculum.

Current Mathematics Unit - 1st Quarter
Students are instructed in a small group with a modified/adapted curriculum. 
-Lessons 
-Review of skills previously learned (ongoing)
-Math instruction is individualized for each student using the Iready Mathematics program that is aligned with Common Core Mathematics Standards.
-Progress monitoring of Math skills at each student's instructional level using the Iready Math program will occur monthly. These individual results will be presented during the student's IEP meeting.
-Remediation of skills:Students complete modules that deliver 10-45 minute lessons with an instructional design that builds conceptual understanding. Each student has their own personal ID and username to complete these individualized modules.
IReady Math Remediation Program includes a technology based adaptive diagnostic and growth monitoring component. Online lessons are adapted and personalized based on student needs. Progress monitoring of Math skills occurs monthly. This program complements and correlates with the core Math program that we currently use.

Current Language Arts Unit - 1st Quarter
Students are instructed in a small group with a modified/adapted curriculum.
Unit 3: Craft and Structure in Informational text (lessons on: unfamiliar words, comparing text structure:chronology, problem - solution, cause and effect, compare and contrast)
*Reading instruction is individualized for each student using the IReady Reading program that is aligned with the Common Core Reading Standards.
-Progress monitoring of Reading skills at each student's instructional level using the Iready program occurs monthly. These individual results will be presented during the student's IEP meeting.
-Daily Oral Language (revising and editing for word choice, capitalization, and punctuation)
-Rewards Writing Program, Lessons 35-45 (Sharpening word choices, sentence combining, writing and editing paragraphs)
-Wordly Wise, vocabulary building at each student's assigned grade level (lessons 4-6). Online resources are available for additional practice of the vocabulary words.

Note: We are fortunate to have chromebooks and 2 ipads available for our students during all of our classes. Technology is integrated into our lessons.

Students can sharpen Social Studies, Science, Math and Language Arts skills while engaging in "fun" activities. Everyone has access to this website.
