What is this class?

Read to Succeed is a Language Arts elective class. Every 7th and 8th grader is required to take at least one Language Arts elective per year. This is your L.A. elective! This class is designed to help you grow and strengthen your reading skills.

Who is Mrs. Migasi?

I have been teaching at Emerson for the past 19 years! Wow, how time flies!! Currently, I am the reading specialist for 7th and 8th grade. It probably goes without saying that I love to read but more importantly, I love the challenge of igniting a passion for reading in my students.

How is this class different than the other L.A. electives?

One of the benefits of this class is that it is designed to be a small group atmosphere. We will read short stories, non fiction articles, plays and more. You will also be doing independent reading in the books of your CHOICE! I promise to do my best to find “interesting” pieces to read. You may not like everything we read but I truly hope you will find at least one of the reading tasks enjoyable. This classroom is a non-threatening reading environment. I want you to share your opinions and I will do my best to incorporate your ideas. We will be reading everyday! The only way to become a better reader is to read more.

Why do I need to take this class?

You were chosen to take this class because of teacher recommendation and/or low test scores in reading on the MAP or STAR assessments. Each trimester we will review your progress in your core classes and on your MAP and STAR assessments to see if you are still appropriate for this class. There will be students entering and leaving each trimester.

What are types of activities are going to help me grow as a reader? Reading is an active process. It doesn’t just happen! Being an active reader requires thinking about what you are reading and making an EFFORT to understand what you have read. You will learn and practice the strategies that great readers use to help them to understand what they read. The following are just a few examples of what is taught in this class: asking questions while you’re reading, recognizing text structures in non fiction text, making connections to what was read, identifying the elements of plot.

What is the best way to contact you?

The best way to contact me is through the district e-mail. I will respond promptly to any questions or concerns as they may arise.
