Connecting your Mobile Device to the Staff Wifi

Recently mobile (Phone / Tablet) manufacturers have pushed out security updates to their line of phones that required more stringent security certificates. This change affects how the phones will connect to enterprise wireless networks. If your mobile device does not connect to the 428Staff WiFi, there are a couple of settings to change.

Android Devices

For this wifi to work, the mobile device will need to be connected to a district account. Follow these steps to accomplish this.


  1. Locate the wifi settings

  2. Tap on 428Staff and enter this information

  • EAP method: PEAP

  • Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2

  • CA Certificate: Use System Certificates

  • Online Certificate Status: Request Certificate Status

  • Domain: wireless.dist428.org

  • Identity: This is your username, typically firstname.lastname

  • Password: This is the same password you use to login to your District email account or Windows Computer

  • Tap advanced and select "Use Device MAC" under Privacy

  1. Tap Connect

If after connecting you are not able to reach many sites, you will need to install additional certificates. Certificates are being used to keep our network secure. To learn more read this short article.

  2. Open the Settings App

    1. Follow the path Security -> more security settings -> Encryption & credentials -> Install a certificate -> CA certificate

    2. Read the warning. We do not capture any private information, but tech does have the ability to see network traffic of devices connected to the district network, on staff wifi or not.

      1. Install anyway

    3. Verification will be needed through unlocking the screen or password

    4. Select one of the certificates that was downloaded

      1. after it is installed, follow the above steps again to install the other

You should now have the correct certificates to properly utilize the staff network.

Apple Devices

  1. Locate your wifi settings

  2. Click on 428Staff

  3. Enter your first.lastname followed by the password you use to log into your district account

  4. Hit Trust on the cert (example screenshot located on the left)

  5. (Optional) It may prompt your to re-enter your credentials again. If it does, please continue to do so.

  1. Disconnect and forget the 428staff wifi network.

  2. Follow this link and download the two files to your device. You will need to be logged in with your district account.

    2. Files should be saved directly to "On My iPhone", not in a downloads folder.

  3. Open the 'Files' app and tap on one of the certificates.

  4. The device will a message: "Review the profile in Settings app if you want to install it."

    1. Tap Close.

  5. Open the Settings app.

  6. Underneath the User details for the device, tap Profile Downloaded.

    1. Tap Install.

    2. If you do not see this option, go to Settings > General > VPN and Device Management, tap the certificates and install them.

  7. If the iOS device has a passcode set, the device will prompt you to enter it. Enter the passcode.

  8. A certificate warning will be displayed. Tap Install. If a second prompt is displayed, tap Install again.

  9. A green 'trusted' should be displayed underneath the profile now. Tap done.

  10. Repeat these steps for the second certificate.

  11. Then go to Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings (at the bottom of the page).

    1. The installed Root Certificates will be displayed in a section entitled "Enable Full Trust for Root Certificates."

    2. There is a slide button next to each certificate, these should both be enabled.

  12. Locate your wifi settings.

  13. Click on 428Staff

  14. Enter your first.lastname followed by the password you use to log into your district account.

  15. Hit Trust on the cert (example screenshot located on the left).

  16. (Optional) It may prompt your to re-enter your credentials again. If it does, please continue to do so.

  17. Go back to wifi settings and tap the information button (i) next to 428Staff

  18. Turn off Private Wi-Fi Address.

  19. Turn off "Limit IP Address Tracking"

  20. Done!
