Here is the reading and the prompt from last year: Last year's reading and prompt
You can look at several sample essays on last year's prompt (which is quite similar to this year's) in the document " Sample essays from last year
Note that these essays range from a score of one, the lowest, to six, the highest score. You should know that if you receive a four on your essay, you would get at least a B on that part of the exam. Some tips: The question from last year asks you to analyze the writer's use of literary techniques. Last year's students were asked to "analyze how the author creates a feeling of anticipation or excitement about the future. In your analysis, you may wish to consider such literary elements as figurative language, imagery, and selection of detail."

Here's what you should do in your introduction: Begin with a thesis that directly answers the question. Here is a sample: The author uses various literary element to create a feeling of anticipation and excitement.
Then preview your supporting claims: She effectively employs figurative language to create this mood. She also uses imagery in creating this sense of hurry. Lastly, she chooses important details that add to the rushed tone.
Then restate your thesis: The author uses literary elements to create excitement.
Then write body paragraphs that you begin with claims such as:
The writer's figurative language makes the reader feel a sense of excitement.
The imagery in this piece creates a feeling of excitement.
The writer selects details that make readers feel the rush that the characters feel.
In each paragraph, you should present evidence for its claim. Here's a hint: if you aren't sure if some aspect of the piece actually supports your thesis, include it anyway. The graders will award you for trying. As always, present that evidence in context. Tell stories. Lastly, explain it.
