Bio: Mrs. Barney is a 1999 graduate of Saint Mary's College in Indiana with a BA in mathematics and a minor in secondary education. She earned an MA in Educational Leadership in 2005 and achieved National Board Certification in 2009. Mrs. Barney's favorite thing to do is hang out with her husband, a social studies teacher at Maine West, and their two sons. This year Mrs. Barney is working as a Consulting Teacher in D219 as part of the new Peer Assistance & Review Program.

Bio: Mr. Chu started his collegiate career studying Biology at Loyola University Chicago. While doing so, he began working in retail pharmacy, and continues to do so today. His calling came a few years into college when he decided to transfer to Northeastern Illinois University obtain a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Mathematics. His roots in the sciences and health field allow him to bring in concrete examples of mathematics that are used daily in the health industry. Aside from his love of teaching, Mr. Chu enjoys trying new restaurants in the City of Chicago, playing volleyball, and doing crossword puzzles. Who said math guys only like numbers??!
Bio: Mr. Delahanty knew pretty early on that he wanted to teach high school math because in addition to loving math and kids, he loves so many other things. That is probably why he is currently involved with coaching math team and the Biking Vikings! Mr. Delahanty's teaching career has given him a wide variety of experience. He first taught in rural Louisiana and then at an all boys private Catholic school in Chicago. Mr. Delahanty finally found a home here in Skokie where he has taught for the last 12 years. Cajun cooking, mountain biking and solving good math problems are some of his favorite hobbies. Says Mr. Delahanty, "It continues to be my privilege to serve the students and parents of this great community."

Bio: Christy graduated from Lake Forest College with a BA in Secondary Education, a BA in Mathematics and a minor/endorsement in Music. She continued her studies as she began teaching and earned an MA in Teaching and Leadership from St. Xavier University followed by an MA in Gifted Education from Northeastern University. She has served in many capacities around the school including AMC coordinator, Math Team coach, Class Board, and chaired several School Improvement Committees. She has a passion for teaching and a zeal for life. Christy is grateful for every new day that she can enjoy her fabulous husband, two beautiful little girls, great church and church family, artful mathematics, and diverse workplace. Bio: Ms. France has been teaching at Niles North High School since 1994. Having become a teacher following a career in business and engineering, she earned her B.S. from the University of Illinois in Business with a specialization in Marketing and her M.S. from the University of Illinois in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Operations Research. One of her favorite things to do is to scour the New York Times for wonderful sources of data, survey results, survey interpretations and great stories about experimental design -- and then bring these stories to her students to expand their thinking, questioning and synthesizing abilities. According to Ms. France, diving into a data set and trying to make sense of it is one of the most enjoyable things you can do in life! Her greatest wish is to encourage her students to have a passion for questioning, wondering, hypothesizing, experimenting, sampling and life-long learning. The students of Niles North High School are future leaders of our world and it is a great honor to be their teacher.

Bio: Miss Helms is a graduate of Ridgewood High School and Illinois State University. She has an endorsement in Middle School Education and a minor in Spanish. Also, she enjoys volleyball, mathematics research, technology, and baking.
Bio: Sana Jaber graduated from UIC with a BS in the Teaching of Mathematics. She was a student teacher at Oak Forest High School and completed her Teacher Candidate Practicum at North Lawndale College Prep. She was also a Calculus grader and mentor for the UIC Mathematics Department. Sana is tirelessly dedicated to all students’ success. She believes by understanding and supporting her students, she can positively impact their studies. Sana earned the Cathy Hill Cawthorn Award, he Hassan Mustafa Abdallah Scholarship.and the the Mosque Foundation Community Scholarship for her studies. She is fluent in English and conversational Arabic. This fall, Sana will be teaching two sections of Algebra 2 and one section of Algebra 2 extension.

Bio: Mr. Joshi graduated from Niles West High School in 1996. He earned all of his current degrees from Loyola University Chicago starting with a B.S. in Mathematics in 2000, accompanied by minors in Philosophy and Statistics (also completed Pre-Med, it’s a cultural thing). He earned a Departmental Honors in Mathematics and in turn went on and earned an M.S. in Pure Mathematics in 2001. After teaching part time as an adjunct professor at Elgin Community College and Daley College he went on and earned his MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Math Education in 2005. Mr. Joshi has been working at Niles North since 2005 and apart from the grading, he loves his career!

Bio: Mrs. Koning was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. She earned her BA from the University of Nevada in Reno in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics and Spanish. She earned her MEd. in Administration from DePaul University in Chicago and her MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University in River Forest. She has been teaching at Niles North for 13 years and has been involved in various extra-curricular activities such as Relay for Life, Homecoming, Senior Class Board, and Student Association. She loves being part of such an exciting district as D219 because of all of the progressive learning opportunities, and she embraces the fact that she is a lifelong learner. She loves teaching, spending time with her family, traveling, reading and anything to do with Chicago. Mrs. Koning always tries to share her desire to learn with her students.

Bio: Mr. Martin was born and raised in Skokie, IL and attended Niles North High School. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan on a gymnastics scholarship and received a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He then attended Northeastern Illinois University and earned a Masters in Mathematics. Mr. Martin taught five years at Fenton High School in Bensenville, IL and has been at Niles North since 2008.

Bio: Mr. Meyer grew up in Prospects Height, IL. He attended Wheeling High School and did his undergraduate work at Arizona State University. He served as the school mascot (Sparky the Sun Devil) for a year and a half, during college. He did his graduate work at Loyola University, Chicago. He began teaching high school mathematics at Warren High School, Gurnee. He has called Niles North his second home since the fall of 2006. He is also the Head Coach of the Boys Gymnastics Program.

Bio: Catherine (Katie) Myers. Katie is an enthusiastic and thoughtful educator with seven years experience at Nichols Middle School in Evanston. She is a graduate of both Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelors in Mathematics Education, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she earned a Masters in Urban Policy Studies. Katie has deep interest in creating investigative lessons that promote group work, inquiry and deep levels of conceptual understanding. She creates a classroom environment that demands conversation, exploration, and persistence in problem solving. She is a strong advocate for social justice both within her classroom walls and throughout the community. She shares her love of teaching with college basketball, live music, her dog, and traveling abroad.

Bio: Crystal comes to us most recently from Willowbrook High School where she has been teaching math since 2009. A Golden Apple Scholar, Crystal earned her BS in mathematics at Illinois Wesleyan University where she was a teaching assistant, math tutor, and member of the Math Society, the Black Student Union, Intercultural Leadership Alliance and another club that promotes awareness of issues multicultural women face. Crystal is an educator who is committed to bringing out the voices of our historically most under-served students and who is passionate about the potential in all students. Her experience includes creating an after-school tutoring center, creating a hip hop dance team, coaching girls' softball, and frequently attending workshops to aid in her professional development.

Bio: Mr. Ruth earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL and has Master's Degrees in both Mathematics and Computer Science from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. He began his career at Maine East H.S., then taught at Loyola Academy, and has been teaching Math at Niles North since 1996. Mr. Ruth also teaches the AP Computer Science courses and has developed a college-level curriculum for an unprecedented course in Video Game Programming. Students in this course are creating web based games in Java, PC games that use the Wii remote as well as the Xbox Kinect sensor, four player games for our originally designed arcade cabinet, and several are creating games for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Bio: Mrs. Serrano graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in Secondary Math Education. She also earned an endorsement in Middle School Education. For the lat two years, Mrs. Serrano has worked with students from low income families to prepare them for the academic challenges of a university education.

Bio: Mr. Sokolowski earned a B.S. in Mathematics Education, with a minor in Political Science, from Illinois State University in 1999 after earning an A.S. degree from William Rainey Harper College in Palatine Illinois. He then started his teaching career at Lake Zurich High School and later moved to Niles North, where he has been teaching since 2000. While teaching at Niles North, Mr. Soklowski has earned an M.S. degree in Curriculum and Instruction through Northern Illinois University and an M.S. degree in Educational Leadership (Type-75 degree) through Northeastern Illinois University. Mr. Sokolowski coached football at Niles North for ten years and baseball for two years. Most of his time outside of school is spent enjoying time with his wife and three young boys. Together they enjoy fishing, water sports, biking, playing sports, traveling, skiing, ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, and many other outdoor activities.

Bio: Mr. Swedberg has been teaching young adults at Niles North since 1994 using the field of mathematics as an inspirational tool. Mr. Swedberg graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and has earned three additional Master's degrees in Education, Administration and Counseling over the past several years. He has recently figured out the answer to the question that so many members of teenage nation ask: "When am I ever going to use this math?" He is proof that you NEVER know. As a 1982 graduate of Niles North, Mr. Swedberg has one more thing to say: "Go Vikings!!"

Bio: Mrs. Taxakis graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, in Math Education and a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, in Secondary Education. She earned a Masters of Arts with Distinction from DePaul University in Math Education in 2011. Mrs. Taxakis has been at Niles North since 2008 and has had the opportunity to work with an amazing staff and student body. She is currently the Niles North Hellenic Club Sponsor and the Girls JV Soccer Coach. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, decorating, and dancing with the Orpheus Folkloric Society all over Chicago, America, and Greece! OPA! Bio: David Wartowski holds a Bachelor of Arts in Honors Economics from the University of Michigan, a Masters in Education from the University of Notre Dame, and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. David has taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, AP Statistics, Writing, Social Studies, AVID and Database Architecture. He holds a Type 75 School Leadership certificate and a Type 9 Teaching certificate with dual certification in math and economics. Bio: Ellen Ho graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelors Degree in Math, certification in Secondary Education, and Minor in French. She is starting her second year as a math paraprofessional at Niles North High School and will be co-sponsoring Chinese Club. Bio: Ms. Sagan has joined Niles North as a math paraprofessional in our algebra and geometry classrooms. Formerly Dr. Sagan, she retired from a rewarding career in medical practice to allow for more involvement with her children during their middle and high school years, while preparing to become a math teacher. She had teaching experience in mathematics prior to her medical training, and returned to math teaching as a volunteer tutor and a paid instructor at a private high school in recent years. Ms. Sagan embarks upon her second career with enthusiasm, eager to combine her lifelong love of mathematics with her dedication to teaching. Along with teaching, Ms.Sagan enjoys bird watching, family gatherings, jogging, biking and gardening.
