BALLET VOCABULARY
Adagio
Slow connected movements
arabesque
supported on one leg, which can be straight or demi-plié, with the other leg extended behind and at right angles to it, and the arms held in various harmonious positions creating the longest possible line from the fingertips to the toes. The shoulders must be held square to the line of direction.
attitude
It is a position on one leg with the other lifted in back, the knee bent at an angle of 90 degrees and well turned out so that the knee is higher than the foot
balancé
Rocking step; Balancé may be done crossing the foot either front or back
battement
Beating. A beating action of the extended or bent leg. There are two types of battements, grands battements and petits battements.
chaînés
Chains, links; a series of rapid turns
changement
Change of feet; springing steps in the fifth position
chassé
Chased. A step in which one foot literally chases the other foot out of its position
coupé
To cut; Coupé is both a step and action. It is commonly executed from cou-de-pied front to cou-de-pied back or vice versa. It may also be done from an extended leg position into fondu or directly through fifth position (as in concluding a jeté). Coupé can only be performed through a closed leg position.

Crossed
dégagé
means to "disengage"
demi-plié
Half-bend of the knees. All steps of elevation begin and end with a demi-plié.

Behind, back
devant
In front
développé
working foot is drawn up to the supporting knee and "developed" or unfolded
en avant
Forward. A direction for the execution of a step. Used to indicate that a given step is executed moving forward, toward the audience.
en face
facing the audience
fondu
Sinking down; melt
grande plié
A deep/large bend
passé
“Passed”; refers to the movement when a dancer goes through a retiré position
pas de bourrée
a sideways step in which one foot crosses behind or in front of the other
plié
Bent, bending. A bending of the knee or knees.
port de bras
Carriage of the arms.
relevé
Raised. A raising of the body on the points or demi-pointes, point or demi-pointe.
rond de jambe
describe a series of circular movements on the ground r ( à terre) or in the air (en l'air)
sous-sus
Sous-sus ["under-over"] (or sus-sous ["over-under"]). A relevé in a tight fifth position with one foot almost on top of the other.
soutenu
meaning “sustained” and describes a ballet dancer turning in a sus-sous or fifth position en pointe and ending up with the opposite foot in front.
tendu
To stretch the foot
turn out
Rotation of the legs and feet from the Hip; opposite of parallel
