Welcome to Wheeling High School Stellar Girls 2019-20!

Stellar Girls at Wheeling High School is an after-school program on Wednesdays from 4-6pm for middle school girls in grades 6-8.  The program, provided in partnership with the iBIO Institute EDUCATE Center, is designed to spark girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics and careers through fun and engaging, hands-on activities led by trained teachers and high school mentors.  The funding for the program is provided by iBio Institute Educate Center so the only cost for this program is a $20 snack fee per session.

Activities are grouped into units that focus on investigating problems and solutions related to FEEDING, HEALING, FUELING, and SAVING the world.

Through this program, girls further their conceptual understanding of STEM topics, develop their hands-on lab and 21st century skills (such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking).  The girls will be interacting with high school mentors who will lead them through the inquiries, giving them an connection to Wheeling High School that may help the girls to transition to high school.

In Stellar Girls, the girls will discover how what they learn in their middle school classes can be used to investigate and solve real-world problems.

The program also provides opportunities for girls to interact with professionals working in STEM fields.  We will have numerous visits from various scientists and business leaders to tell us about what they do and to share their expertise with us.

Now in its sixth year at WHS, the Stellar Girls program is an excellent way to develop girls’ learning, self-confidence, and interest in STEM topics and careers.
