Welcome to the Hersey Parent Education Nights Site!
Parent Education Nights at Hersey occur about 3 times in the school year. Your Student Services team work on identifying key issues that may be impacting our teens and collaborate with community resources to present on a subject to keep our parent community well informed. Our Hersey Parent Education Nights are held in the Hersey Cafeteria from 7-8:30pm.

On Wednesday September 7th at 7:00pm, JHHS Student Services and Township High School District 214 will be sponsoring a parent night entitled “The Other Side of Cannabis”. You will get cutting edge information about how cannabis affects the physical and mental health of adolescents. Jody Belsher, CRSS (film producer), will present statistics, the facts, the myths of today’s marijuana and a clip from her documentary, which took 1st place at the Sunset Los Angeles Film festival for Best Feature Documentary. John and Marta McGuinness, from the FAIR agency will also discuss the evidence-based research regarding treatment interventions. Parents, staff and students of District 214 and it's sender schools are all welcome to this event. The presentation begins at 7:00pm and will take place in Hersey’s cafeteria.

Topic: “The Adolescent Brain Development and Behavior”
Location: JHHS Cafeteria
In this presentation the speaker will discuss the growth of the adolescent brain and
how it impacts their decision-making, risk taking, and independence. She will also
focus on typical adolescent behavior versus signs of depression and/or anxiety;
and ways to support an adolescent who is struggling through the use of Dialectical
Behavior Therapy Skills. Presenter Jennifer McAdams, Licensed Clinical
Professional Counselor is the Clinical Manager at ERC- Insight Adolescent and
Family Program. Jennifer has specialized training in treating adolescents with
school refusal, mood, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Topic: “Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth”
Location: JHHS Cafeteria
Designed for parents, teachers, therapists, and other adults who want to support
youth, this program provides an overview of gender and sexual identity, as well as
the specific challenges experienced by young people who identify as lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ), or those who are questioning their sexual
orientation or gender identity. This workshop provides information about youth
identity development, different sexual and gender identities, and the negative
effects of discrimination as well as opportunities to practice strategies to support
LGBTQ+ young people. Speaker Lizzy Appleby, MSW, Youth Program Manager at
Angles will present.
