Coaching Staff

                Ryan Berba- Distance/Mid-Distance  (630)-544-1260) (

This will be Coach Berba’s 2nd year coaching the VHHS Track and Field team.. His previous experience includes 8 years of coaching Cross Country and Track and Field at Morgan Park High School where he was able to lead the Mustangs to a 3rd place State finish in Track.  Coach Berba ran Cross Country and Track at Glenbard North High School and continued to compete at the college level. He has run more than 20 marathons and is looking to complete his second Ironman this year. A graduate of North Central College, Coach Berba also teaches Psychology, International Studies, and World History at VHHS. When he is not teaching or coaching, he enjoys spending time with his family and 2 dogs.

Matt Clifford – Throws

Coach Clifford graduated from Canton High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History Education from Illinois State University, a Master’s degree in History from Illinois State University, and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University.  This is Coach Clifford’s eight year as the throws coach with the Vernon Hills Girls’ Track Team.  Coach Clifford is a member of the Social Studies Department at Vernon Hills High School teaching World History and AP European History.

Ken Mooney -- Sprints/Jumps

Coach Mooney returns to Vernon Hills Track & Field, making this his second year as an assistant coach, he had the pleasure of coaching the 2015 team, who took 1st Place in their sectional. Coach Mooney first started coaching at VHHS for the football program in 2013, who recently took 2nd in State.  Coach earned his Bachelor's in theater performance, and spent time performing with the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, and wrote for a creative production company. Coach Mooney is currently a Learning Behavior Specialist at an Elementary School. He lives with his younger brother in Mundelein; they play video games and talk about 80s movies.

Don Proft - Sprints/Hurdles

Coach Proft ran Cross Country and Track at Glenbrook South High School.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies/History Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Carthage College.  He is a 6th Grade Social Studies teacher at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee.  Coach Proft has experience as both an assistant and head coach for Track and Cross Country at Stevenson High School and has been an assistant coach for Track and at Grayslake Central High School and Warren High School.  He also coaches Girls Cross Country at Warren High School.  In his free time, he loves to travel with his wife, Kari and three children, Madison, Noah and Taylor.  Ask him about his trip to Cuba with his son Noah and the VHHS Orchestra!

                                                    Mike Bunning - Volunteer Girls Track Coach:  
This is Coach Bunning’s second season working with the Boys’ and Girls’ pole vaulters.   Coach Bunning was a three sport athlete at Glenbard South High School prior to attending Cornell University where he pole vaulted for four years.  In his free time Coach Bunning enjoys spending time with his wife Chris and attending the various activities of his 3 daughters.
