CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT

It is always best to include a student's teacher in the process of selecting an instrument. Take your time. Figure out your price range. Visit several shops. Check their trade-up and rent-to-own policies. Have the student play several instruments, and check out a few of them for extended-time evaluation in order to determine quality, sound, and feel. Also, don't assume a bow and case are included in the instrument price - you may have to purchase these separately.

CONSIDERATIONS

How long does the player plan to keep this instrument?  The better the instrument, the better the resale value.

Regarding stringed instruments, new should not be assumed to be better than old. Instruments age differently.

Is the instrument in good condition?  If possible, bring it to an independent dealer to see if it needs repair, new strings, new bridge, new pegs. What will it cost to get the instrument into great playing shape?
