Certified Nursing Assistant

Overview:

This course introduces students to skills, knowledge, and attitudes required of a health care worker. Included in this course are basic nursing assistant theory, laboratory experiences, medical terminology, and basic anatomy and physiology hands-on patient care in local health care facilities is included. Students who meet requirements may take the Illinois Department of Public Health Certified Nurse Assistant examination.


Dual Credit from SWIC:

Certified Nursing Assistant - 7 credit hours
Medical Terminology - 1 credit hour

What to expect:

Students should be prepared to learn and apply health and safety procedures associated with the medical field.
Students will be expected to have a physical, TB test, white shoes, a watch with a second hand, and scrubs. Each task must be completed according to guidelines in the presence of the instructor prior to applying those concepts in a clinical setting.

  • Develop professional skills and responsibility
  • Qualify for certification in Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Perform basic health care skills such as taking and recording blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration
  • Understand and perform CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, and first aid
  • Understand your role in meeting patient needs through direct care of patients
  • Use proper lifting, moving, and transfer techniques on patients
  • Know common health problems and diseases
  • Know anatomy and body systems
Career Opportunities and Job Titles:
Entry-level after high school graduation and Collinsville Area Vocational Center training:
  • Certified nurse  in hospitals, outpatient centers, nursing homes, medical offices, and home care industry
  • CNA experience is desirable when gaining admission to nursing schools and universities
Entry-level after Junior College Program leading to an Associate Degree or Certificate Program
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with Associate Degree in hospitals, outpatient centers, nursing homes, medical offices, and home care industry
  • Medical Assistant
  • Rehabilitation, physical therapy aid
Entry-level after Baccalaureate Degree:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) in hospitals, outpatient centers, nursing homes, medical offices, and home care industry
  • Management career in the nursing/health care field
  • Physical therapy, occupational therapy, laboratory technician, X-ray technician, etc.
