Dear CHS Families,
We are excited that CHS will become a 1 to 1 Chromebook community.
Chromebook Distribution: All students will receive a Chromebook this year! We have established three different nights for the Chromebooks to be distributed by graduating class. A parent/guardian must attend with their child. There will be a brief 15 minute presentation in the Auditorium followed by distribution of Chromebooks in the High School Cafeteria.
August 24th – Class of 2018
August 25th – Class of 2017
August 26th - Class of 2016
Last names A-L report to Auditorium for 5:45 p.m.
Last names M-Z report to Auditorium for 6:45 p.m.
Class of 2019 (incoming freshmen) already have Chromebooks. If you are a new student to the class, Chromebooks will be distributed the night of Freshman Orientation September 1. Insurance information will also be available on September 1.
If a parent and student are unable to make it to the distribution nights, Chromebooks can be picked up during the first days of school from one of the Instructional Technology Coaches (Ms. Lanni and Mr. Palmer). Chromebooks will not be distributed without a parents signature.
Enjoy the final weeks of August!
Your Cumberland High School
Families will have an option to purchase an insurance plan for student chromebooks. This initial offering will be available for the first two weeks of school. The enrollment window will then be closed and may be offered again at another time during the year. The plans are for 1, 2 or 3 year options and will cover any accidental damage without a deductible.
Take a look at the form below, they will be available at the the middle school as well as the high school. If you would like further information please contact the building for assistance.

There's a Chromebook on every desk in Sean Connolly's 7th-grade social studies class at North Cumberland Middle School. But that's not unusual. Techbooks replaced textbooks in Cumberland's middle schools this year and every class looks like this now. Up front, there's a white board where Connolly is projecting images from his own Chromebook screen. (Valley Breeze photos by Marcia Green)

Last Wednesday, the Cumberland Town Council approved the purchase of Chromebooks for each middle school student for use beginning this fall. The IT department has finalized the order of the Chromebooks, which will come with a durable carrying case that will need to be used at all times, when the Chromebooks are not in use. We are excited as a district to be able to provide this opportunity to our middle level students.
The entire middle school faculty received their Chromebooks in June and were immediately given the opportunity to become acclimated to their devices. Teachers participated in an intensive two day Google training, in which they were introduced to applications, extensions, and ideas that will be used to integrate this new tool into their instruction.
Distribution of the devices to students will take place in late summer (dates are provided below). Faculty and students will have access to Chromebooks 24/7, and are permitted to use the device outside of the school building. Classrooms will transform into 1:1 learning environments which support an equitable access to technology. In 1:1 classrooms, the integration of technology is both intentionally and spontaneously driven by personal inquiry. Technology ceases to be a scheduled event, freeing teachers and students to collaborate and create in real-time. Additionally, Cumberland’s 1:1 Chromebook program is influenced by Rhode Island’s adoption of the Common Core Standards and the need to better prepare our students for the Digital Age, in which we both live and work. Providing constant access to technology, both in and outside of the classroom, is critical in meeting these national standards.
Finally, we realize that there have been some questions regarding supply lists. Now that this initiative is a reality, we are carefully working with our faculty/staffs to make sure that we are using the Chromebooks to their fullest potential. In addition to the device, your child will also have a district issued email account and cloud space, so that we can limit the amount of paper that is consumed and supplies purchased. We ask for your patience while we process this information. More information will follow in a subsequent email/communication. Thank you and we look forward to partnering with you to provide a 21st century education for your child.
