 Water Resources Management and Governance, Irrigation Management and Hydrodynamics Modelling

VAN Pham Dang Tri is currently the Head of the Department of Water Resources, College of Environment and Natural Resources, and Research Advisor of the Research Institute for Climate Change, both at Can Tho University, Vietnam. With a wide range of scientific background, he focuses on holistic research on integrated water resources management, irrigation, hydrodynamics modelling and possible impacts of climate change on behaviours of the different river networks, and on agriculture and aquaculture in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. He is currently participating in different national and international projects either as a project manager or technical adviser.

  • 1D hydraulic model (HEC-RAS, ISIS 1D, and Mike 11) for flooding estimation and exploring the nature of channel bed (e.g. hydraulic roughness) in a multi-channel network; and,
  • GIS application in river management (ArcGIS, and QGIS).

  • 2D hydraulic model (CCHE2D);
  • GIS and Image-processing application in river management (Idrisi, Mapinfo, and ENVI);
  • Reduced complexity hydraulic model (CAESAR) for flooding estimation in a multi-channel network;
  • Programming in Matlab and Visual Basic Application (VBA) in Excel environment; and,
  • Physical-socio-economic evaluation packages (i.e. Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) models and Nutrient monitoring for tropical farming systems model for farming system analysis and land use planning).

  • Impacts of projected climate change scenarios (focusing on surface water resources changes) on physical and socio-economic settings at local and regional scales.
  • Waterscape management and water resources governance.
  • Optimizing the irrigation scheme, especially where the water-conflicts are highly complex.
  • River modelling, especially on a multi-channel network, on flooding, saline intrusion dynamics, and river-bed dynamics.
  • Geomorphological changes of a riverbed, especially in the context of climate change and socio-economic development.
