My statement for the elections for the EATCS Council
EATCS can be seen as representing the whole European community working in the broad area of Theoretical Computer Science.
I applaud the EATCS's efforts at highlighting the brilliant work of our colleagues by awarding its prizes. However, I believe that it should make more of an effort to be fully open and transparent. If elected to the EATCS Council (or, more formally, if I become an EATCS Full Member), I will advocate for a change in this regard. Here are a few concrete directions.
1. The elections for the EATCS Council consist of two steps. First is a "survey" among all the members. According to the English translation of the statute, composing the final list of the proposed candidates is fully within the Secretary General/Managing Director's prerogatives, and in fact, only the current EATCS Council votes.
2. There should be an annual report on the activities of the association, available to the general public. This has been the case for many years:
https://www.eatcs.org/index.php/activity-reports
and seems to have stopped after 2022.
3. The relationship of EATCS and different conferences should be clarified and made fully transparent. In particular, I believe that, instead of requiring the participants to become EATCS members for the affiliated conferences, it would be better to encourage them to do so.
