Important Soils

The class of a soil indicate the degree of limitation imposed by the soil in its use for mechanized agriculture.  There are seven classes used to rate agricultural land capability, Class 1 lands having the highest capability for agricultural purposes and Class 7 lands having the lowest capability to support agricultural land use activities.  Cowessess lands range from Class 1 soils to Class 4 soils.

Class 1 soils have no significant limitations in use for crops.

Class 2 soils have moderate limitations that restrict the range of crops or require moderate conservation practices.

Class 3 soils have moderatly severe limitation that restrict range of crops or require special conservation practices.

Class 4 soils have severe limitations that restrict the range of crops or require special conservation practices or both.
