In this Integrated Thematic Unit (ITU), students will exploring how social problems relate to environmental problems.  Our ITU has a science focus, incorporating the activities and lessons are based in biology, earth/planetary science, chemistry, and physics, using elements of other content to reinforce scientific content.  Other subject can be easily be added to this ITU to incorporate more subjects.  In the social justice activity, students will compare how poverty relates to environmental issues by watching and reflecting on videos regarding pollution and poverty.  For the cooperative learning activity, students will work together to sample water sources and infer how pollution effective the different water sources.  The activities will culminate to a beach clean up and trash collecting activity for their service learning.  From the collection of trash, the students will be making an artistic expression on how the earth will look in the distant future for their art project.
