Contest: How much does the snow sculpture of the Climax Engine weigh?

Problem: Determine the weight of the Climax Locomotive snow sculpture located in the Corry Area Historical Society museum's parking lot in Corry, PA. Three winners will be chosen from the correct answers and prizes will be given.  All entries must be entered in the contest box located at the museum in Mead Park between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Feb. 8th during the 2014 Corry Winterfest held at Mead Park. This contest is open to all, one entry per person please; entry forms will be provided. Please do not publicly share your answer until after the contest is over, however, solving this problem can be a group, family, or classroom activity, with each member able to complete an entry. The measurements listed below are approximate, but will be used to determine the correct answer. Your answer must be listed in tons.

Useful facts:

·         If the snow sculpture was placed into a box, the box would measure 20' by 6' by 6'.

·         One quarter of the box would NOT be filled with snow, due to the shape of the locomotive. Take this into consideration in your computations.

·         A one foot cube of tightly packed snow weighs 20 pounds.

·         The volume of a rectangular prism = length x width x height

·         A ton is equal to 2000 lbs.

Interesting facts:

·         The largest Climax locomotive manufactured weighed over 100 tons.

·         The Class B Climax locomotive located in the Corry Area Historical museum weighs 30 tons.

·         View the snow sculpture and the original Climax locomotive housed in the museum during Winterfest!   We will also provide ‘Polar Bear’ tours, serve hot chocolate & cookies, host the Corry Artists Guild art show, identify old photos, and show old movies. Join us this Saturday at the museum and also enjoy the other events occurring at Corry Winterfest 2014 hosted by the Corry Community Development Corporation (CCDC).
