Elizabeth Hall (Liz) dies at 15 years old from a hit and run. She then wakes up on the S.S. Nile, A cruise ship for the afterlife. Room 13,0002, bottom bunk. On the boat, she meets a girl named Thandi who is one year older than her, and had been shot in the head. Liz also meets Curtis Jest who died of a heroin overdose. In her lifetime, he was famous for singing. When the boat stops, everyone gets off. Liz sees a lady waving for her, her grandmother Betty. Betty died long before Liz was born, from breast cancer. After staying in Elsewhere with her grandmother, it is time to get an avocation. She gets to work at the DDA (Division of domestic Animals.) She eventually gets a dog named Sadie. In Elsewhere, you only age backwards, and never die. She falls in love with Owen, who died at 27 years old from a fire, but luckily when Liz comes to Elsewhere he is 17; 2 years older than her. Leaving her old life was hard, but starting death isn’t as bad as you’d think.

Other books Gabrielle Zevin has written are:

"It's difficult to ever go back to the same places or people. You turn away, even for a moment, and when you turn back round, everything's changed."

"No one actually needs another person or another person's love to survive. Love is when we have irrationally convinced ourselves that we do."

"Betty inhales sharply, 'It's just I thought I had lost you forever.' Oh, Betty, don't you know there's no such thing as forever?"

I would recommend this book for people 10 + because some parts are too "intense" for younger children. If you like adventure, romance, and books about the afterlife then you should enjoy this book.

Sarita O: "It's a very touching and beautiful book."
