Principles of Engineering

Course Title: Principles of Engineering (POE)

Course Credit: 1 Unit

Grade Level: 11-12

Course Duration: 40 Weeks

Textbook: There is no textbook for this class

Course Description:

In 1995 the New York State Education Department published a new syllabi entitled, "Technology Education Principles of Engineering: An MST Approach to Technology Education." This new course was intended to introduce concepts used in engineering* to the high school level and reinforce mathematics and science skills within a technology education program. The course was developed in response to national studies at the time that supported the implementation of pre-college courses that survey and stimulate interest in, and access to, careers in engineering and technology. Additionally this capstone course was intended to explore the relationship of math, science and technology while enhancing general technological literacy. Required School Supplies:

1. Notebook: 100 page notebook or 1 section of a 3 or 5 subject notebook

2. A pocket folder to keep old homework, quiz and test papers in

3. Pens and pencils (Mechanical pencils are preferred for sketching and drawing)

Homework Policy:

All homework assignments are to be written in your agenda and turned in on the due date set by the teacher. Late assignments will be accepted until the end of each ten week marking period. However, assignments turned in one day late will receive a deduction of 10 points. Assignments 2-5 days late will receive a grade no greater than 70%, and assignments more than 5 days late will receive a grade of no greater than 50%. Any student absent due to illness is expected to see the teacher for missed assignments the day the student returns to school. At that time assignments and due dates will be discussed and set for the student. Students repeatedly turning in late assignments will not be given an opportunity for extra credit assignments in hopes of replacing low grades due to lateness. Extra credit assignments are intended for those who struggle with assignments and/or are interested in further developing a knowledge base in a particular area.

Grading Policy:

Homework and quiz grades will be counted once in the teacher’s grade book,

while tests, lab work and project grades will be counted twice. Students may

use this to determine their average at any time during the school year.

Final averages will be determined by averaging the student’s ten-week

marking period grades with their final exam grade.
