Biomass District Heat

Local Studies and Projects

Three separate but related studies on use of biomass have been done in Cook County. See Timeline and History of Biomass in Cook County.

Two studies were contracted by CCLEP with BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota and support by the County Board of Commissioners centers on a proposed biomass district heating facility for the City of Grand Marais. County support is through a county 1 % sales tax. Step One of this study by subcontractor FVB Energy, Inc, is complete. The findings in the Step One Study warranted proceeding with further analysis in Step Two Study that was completed in 2014.

Between 2010 and June 2013, the County Board of Commissioners and CCLEP, contracted with Dovetail Partners to oversee a study with the University of Minnesota on a wide range of biomass uses and issues. Their work involved two studies, Phase One and Phase Two, with background reports and fact sheets. (See Dovetail studies below)

(As noted in the Timeline, previous study done in 2009 served as ground work for the two studies briefly explained above.)
